Legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar believes India have what it takes to reach the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, though he underlined the threat posed by England’s experienced and IPL-seasoned squad ahead of the semi-finals.

The last four stage begins with South Africa national cricket team taking on New Zealand national cricket team in Kolkata on Wednesday, followed by defending champions India national cricket team facing England cricket team at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.

South Africa are the only unbeaten side left in the competition, while England progressed through the Super Eights without defeat. India and New Zealand have each suffered one loss.

“If you look at the form going into the semis, South Africa and England have won all their matches in the Super Eight. India has lost one, and New Zealand have lost one. So you would say those two teams would be favourites to get to the finals,” Gavaskar said during a media interaction ahead of the DP World Celebrity Golf Event scheduled for March 6, which aims to raise awareness for the CHAMPS Foundation.

The foundation supports former international sportspersons in India across disciplines who face financial hardship later in life.

India vs England: “Another cracker”

Despite pointing to current form, Gavaskar expects a tightly contested clash between India and England.

“It’s going to be another cracker, like the (virtual) quarterfinal against the West Indies. Both sides are very well matched. They have got batting, bowling, middle order, and finishers. Both have variety and plenty of T20 experience.”

He also noted England’s familiarity with Indian conditions due to their players’ involvement in the IPL.

“A few of their players have played in the IPL. They’re familiar with Indian conditions and the pressure that comes with big crowds.”

No weight of history at Wankhede

India’s inconsistent semi-final record at the Wankhede was brushed aside by Gavaskar, who insisted the current squad should not be burdened by the past.

“It’s a new era, a new team. I believe India has the capability to go all the way to the final in Ahmedabad.”

Will Jacks the X-factor?

Gavaskar identified Will Jacks as a potential game-changer for England. The all-rounder has claimed four Player of the Match awards in the tournament.

“If there is a little bit of a turn, he could be a handful. How (Sanju) Samson, Suryakumar Yadav or Hardik Pandya handle him will be key. He is on a roll. To have someone like him at No. 7 is a real plus — just like Shivam Dube was for India the other day.”

In Gavaskar’s assessment, the contest could hinge on the closing stages, with composure in the decisive overs likely to determine who advances to the final.
