The T20 World Cup 2026 final between India and New Zealand is set to take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, with anticipation building across the country ahead of the decisive clash. With demand surging for tickets and accommodation around the venue, attention has also turned to whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the high-profile match.
The final is expected to attract numerous dignitaries and VIP guests as India aim to secure another major ICC title.
Prime Minister Modi had attended the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 final at the same venue, which has prompted widespread speculation about whether he might also be present for this year’s T20 World Cup final.
India’s Journey to the Final
India reached the final after a tense semi-final victory over England on Thursday. Batting first, Suryakumar Yadav’s side posted a total of 253 runs. England mounted a strong chase led by Jacob Bethell’s 105 from 48 balls, but ultimately fell short as India secured the win and advanced to the final.
India’s campaign has not been without challenges. Although the team performed strongly in the group stage, they suffered a defeat against South Africa during the Super Eight phase, placing them under pressure.
A crucial match against West Indies at Eden Gardens helped India regain momentum and secure a place in the semi-finals.
Now the team enters the final with the opportunity to add another ICC title following victories in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and the ICC Champions Trophy.
Uncertainty Over PM Modi’s Attendance
Despite the significance of the match, there has been no official confirmation regarding Prime Minister Modi’s attendance at the final.
According to a report by Zee News, the likelihood of him being present at the stadium is currently considered low. The government is reportedly focused on the evolving geopolitical situation in West Asia, which requires close monitoring.
PM Modi’s Schedule on Sunday
Another factor affecting the possibility of his attendance is a packed official schedule in Delhi on Sunday.
Prime Minister Modi is expected to inaugurate and lay foundation stones for several development projects, including expansion work related to the Delhi Metro. He is also scheduled to launch projects worth Rs 15,200 crore under the General Pool Residential Accommodation plan as part of urban redevelopment initiatives.
While the chances of the Prime Minister attending the match appear limited, the final is still expected to feature several prominent personalities. Reports indicate that ICC chairman Jay Shah could be present at the stadium, alongside well-known cricketers such as Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni, who were also seen during the semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium.
