India are set to face New Zealand in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on March 8 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. However, the team has taken an unusual step ahead of the title clash as they look to avoid memories of a painful defeat at the same venue.

India Switch Hotel Before the Final

According to journalist Vimal Kumar, the Indian team has decided to change hotels before the final against New Zealand.

The decision is linked to the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 final, when India suffered a defeat to Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium. During that tournament, the team had stayed at ITC Narmada, and the result left lingering memories associated with the venue.

To avoid those, India have reportedly opted to stay at a different hotel for the T20 World Cup final. Instead of ITC Narmada, the squad is expected to stay at Taj Skyline.

Another factor behind the move is logistical. New Zealand, who were the first team to qualify for the final, were already allocated ITC Narmada by the ICC, meaning India had to arrange alternative accommodation.

Superstitions and Tournament Routine

This is not the first instance of the Indian team following an unusual routine during the tournament. Ahead of the semi-final in Mumbai, the team delayed a training session due to a lunar eclipse.

Such routines and beliefs are not uncommon in cricket, where players and teams often follow specific habits during major tournaments. With the stakes as high as a World Cup final, maintaining a positive mindset can be considered crucial.

By choosing to stay at a different hotel, India are attempting to approach the final with a fresh outlook, distancing themselves from the memories of the 2023 ODI World Cup defeat at the same stadium.

Bumrah Key to India’s Semi-Final Win

India secured their place in the final after a tense semi-final victory over England in Mumbai. Defending a total of 254, India faced strong resistance from England as Jacob Bethell scored 105 from 48 balls to keep the chase alive.

Jasprit Bumrah played a decisive role in the closing stages. In his final two overs, he conceded only 14 runs, shifting the momentum back in India’s favour.

England ultimately finished seven runs short of the target, allowing India to book their place in the final.

With the focus now shifting to Ahmedabad, India are ready to face New Zealand in the tournament decider.
