The San Francisco Unicorns vs Washington Freedom review describes one of the most thrilling matches of Major League Cricket 2026. Despite the suggested narrative, it was Washington Freedom who emerged victorious by seven runs at the Oakland Coliseum to book their place in the MLC 2026 Final against the Los Angeles Knight Riders.

In a run fest that produced 469 runs, Washington Freedom posted a daunting 238/6 before surviving a sensational counterattack from Matt Short, whose stunning century almost carried the Unicorns over the line. However, disciplined death bowling ensured the Freedom held their nerve to complete a memorable victory.

Washington Freedom Batters Dominate

After winning the toss and opting to bat, Washington Freedom’s top order wasted no time in attacking the San Francisco bowlers. Captain Steve Smith led from the front with a blistering 43 off just 20 deliveries, smashing four fours and three sixes.

Mitchell Owen continued the aggressive approach, scoring 42 from only 19 balls, while Rachin Ravindra added a quickfire 28 off 14 deliveries to maintain the scoring rate.

The star of the innings, however, was wicketkeeper-batter Andries Gous. Fresh from his heroics in the Eliminator, Gous produced another match-winning knock, scoring 73 off 40 balls with eight boundaries and three sixes. His innings held the Freedom batting together while allowing the middle order to continue attacking.

Glenn Maxwell contributed 13, while Nikhil Chaudhary chipped in with 20 from 13 balls. Ben Dwarshuis then finished the innings in style with an unbeaten 11 off just four deliveries as Washington Freedom closed on an imposing 238/6.

For the Unicorns, Xavier Bartlett was the standout bowler with figures of 3/36, while Ghulam Mudassar claimed two wickets.

Matt Short’s Heroics Go in Vain

Chasing a massive target of 239, San Francisco Unicorns needed a flying start and received one through Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Finn Allen, who scored 18 and 14 respectively.

Captain Matt Short then produced one of the finest innings of the tournament. The left-hander smashed 121 off only 56 balls, hitting 11 fours and eight towering sixes. His fearless stroke play kept the Unicorns firmly in the contest despite the steep target.

However, wickets continued to fall around him. Sanjay Krishnamurthi managed 10, Aaron Hardie was dismissed for just three, while Hassan Khan contributed 21 from 16 balls in a useful cameo. Hammad Azam added seven late in the innings, but the required rate proved just out of reach.

The Unicorns eventually finished on 231/6, falling agonisingly short by seven runs despite Short’s extraordinary effort.

Washington Bowlers Deliver Under Pressure

Defending such a high total was never going to be easy on a batting-friendly surface, but Washington’s bowlers held their nerve during the closing overs.

Ben Dwarshuis was the most successful bowler with 2/44, while Saurabh Netravalkar delivered an economical spell of 1/35 in four overs. Nikhil Chaudhary, Mitchell Owen and Rachin Ravindra also chipped in with one wicket each to prevent the Unicorns from completing the chase.

San Francisco Unicorns vs Washington Freedom Review

Although the title may suggest San Francisco Unicorns reach MLC final, the result tells a different story. Washington Freedom earned a thrilling seven-run victory to eliminate the Unicorns and secure their place in the championship match. While Matt Short’s magnificent century will be remembered as one of the innings of the tournament, Andries Gous’ composed knock and Washington’s disciplined bowling proved decisive in one of the best matches of MLC 2026.
