Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar described India’s consecutive triumphs in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup as a remarkable accomplishment following the team’s victory over New Zealand in the 2026 final.
India delivered a dominant performance in front of a packed Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, defeating New Zealand to claim their third T20 World Cup title. The hosts successfully defended their crown, becoming the first team in history to win back-to-back editions of the tournament.
India’s batters set the tone early in the powerplay, helping the team build momentum and eventually secure a convincing win on home soil.
Gavaskar Highlights Difficulty of Consecutive World Cup Wins
Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar reflected on how difficult it is to win ICC tournaments, particularly in consecutive editions.
“India’s trophy cabinet is quite full now. Winning ICC trophies is not easy. Bilateral dominance is different. ICC tournaments have zero margin for error. You must bring your best every game. It takes skill, not luck. The pressure is huge and these players represent over a billion people when they step on the field. No team has won back-to-back T20 World Cups and defending a title is tough.”
Competitive Tournament Raises the Stakes
Gavaskar also pointed out that several teams arrived well prepared for the tournament, making the competition even more challenging.
He noted that associate nations produced impressive performances during the event and frequently tested stronger teams. South Africa and New Zealand emerged as major contenders in the tournament, while Australia did not advance to the Super 8 stage.
“Winning the T20 World Cup back-to-back is a massive achievement. This is the best moment in Indian cricket history.”
India’s victory in Ahmedabad marked another milestone for the team, as they became the first side to retain the T20 World Cup title while also lifting the trophy for the third time overall.
