Suryakumar Yadav and his Indian side etched their names in history after securing the nation’s third T20 World Cup title. The hosts produced a commanding performance in the final, defeating New Zealand by 96 runs and becoming the first team to claim consecutive titles in the tournament.

With the victory, India also registered the largest margin of victory ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final. The triumph placed Suryakumar Yadav alongside Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni among India’s captains who have lifted the trophy.

New Zealand’s Decision To Bowl First Backfires

New Zealand won the toss and elected to field in the high-stakes final, a call that quickly proved costly as India’s batting unit launched a relentless attack. Abhishek Sharma led the early charge, returning to form with a blistering 18-ball half-century, the fastest fifty in a T20 World Cup final.

While Abhishek’s rapid start set the tone, Sanju Samson once again emerged as the standout performer. The right-hander struck 89 off 46 balls, including five fours and eight sixes. Together, Abhishek and Samson put together a brisk 98-run opening partnership.

Ishan Kishan also played a significant role, scoring 54 from 25 deliveries. New Zealand briefly clawed their way back when Jimmy Neesham picked up three wickets in a single over. Notably, Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed for a golden duck.

India raced to 203/1 after 15 overs, but the momentum slowed as they managed just 25 runs from the next 20 balls while losing four additional wickets. Although the hosts had been eyeing a total close to 300, even reaching 250 began to look challenging. Shivam Dube then produced a late flourish, smashing 24 runs in the final over to take India to 255.

New Zealand Lose Momentum After Bright Beginning

New Zealand began their chase positively, building a 30-run opening stand. Axar Patel then provided the breakthrough by dismissing Finn Allen, who departed for 9 off 7 balls.

Tim Seifert continued to counterattack despite wickets falling at the other end. The right-hander played an aggressive knock of 52 from 26 balls, striking two fours and five sixes. Apart from Seifert, Mitchell Santner was the only batter who appeared threatening during the chase.

Axar Patel And Jasprit Bumrah Lead India’s Bowling Charge

Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah delivered standout performances with the ball, leading India’s bowling effort in the final. Axar claimed three wickets in his three overs, removing Finn Allen, Glenn Phillips, and Daryl Mitchell at crucial moments.

Bumrah produced an even more destructive spell, finishing with four wickets. After taking the wicket of Rachin, Bumrah ran through the lower order and ended with figures of 4/15 in four overs. India’s bowling dominance was evident as Abhishek Sharma was trusted with the 19th over, where he took the final wicket to seal India’s third World Cup triumph.
