Pakistan’s fate in the T20 World Cup could be decided even before they take the field against Sri Lanka, with the England vs New Zealand Super 8 Group 2 contest in Colombo on Friday set to shape the semi-final picture.

A victory for New Zealand would immediately end Pakistan’s hopes of reaching the last four, regardless of the outcome of their final group match on Saturday. Even a no-result due to rain would be enough to send New Zealand through alongside England.

With rain having already disrupted multiple matches in Sri Lanka during the tournament, Pakistan will be hoping the weather stays clear this time.

Super 8 Group 2 Standings

As it stands, the points table reads:

  1. England – 4 points, 2 matches, NRR +1.491
  2. New Zealand – 3 points, 2 matches, NRR +3.050
  3. Pakistan – 1 point, 2 matches, NRR -0.461
  4. Sri Lanka – 0 points, 2 matches, NRR -2.800

Encouragingly for Pakistan, early forecasts suggest minimal chances of rain in Colombo on Friday.

The encounter carries greater urgency for New Zealand, who are looking to confirm their semi-final berth. England, meanwhile, have already secured qualification after registering back-to-back wins in the Super 8 stage.

New Zealand’s commanding 61-run triumph over Sri Lanka significantly boosted their net run rate to +3.050. To ensure progression, the Black Caps simply need to avoid a heavy loss.

Pakistan, on the other hand, are under pressure following their defeat to England. With a net run rate of -0.461, they require not only a substantial New Zealand defeat but also a convincing win over Sri Lanka to surpass the Black Caps on net run rate.

New Zealand have demonstrated their ability to handle spin-heavy attacks, most notably against Sri Lanka, where they overcame the co-hosts in conditions that suited the opposition.
