India piled up 256 — the second-highest total in T20 World Cup history — before sealing a 72-run victory, turning Sunday’s Super 8 clash against the West Indies into a virtual knockout.
The Indian cricket team defeated Zimbabwe by 72 runs in their T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 encounter at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday to keep their semi-final ambitions intact.
After suffering defeat to South Africa national cricket team in their Group 1 opener, India faced a must-win scenario and responded emphatically. Half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and Hardik Pandya powered India to 256/4 after being asked to bat first.
Zimbabwe’s reply never truly gathered pace. Despite an unbeaten 97 from Brian Bennett, they finished on 184/6 from their 20 overs, well short of the target.
The outcome means India’s final Super 8 Group 1 fixture against the West Indies cricket team at Eden Gardens on Sunday will effectively decide which side advances to the semi-finals.
Earlier in the day, the West Indies lost to South Africa and now sit level with India on two points in the standings. The Proteas top the group with four points and will conclude their Super 8 campaign against Zimbabwe.
India’s Top Order Sets the Tone
Opening alongside Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson began aggressively, putting pressure on Zimbabwe’s bowlers in the early overs. However, he was unable to build on his start and departed for 24, caught at deep midwicket off Blessing Muzarabani.
Abhishek then combined with Ishan Kishan to maintain the momentum. Their partnership carried India to 80/1 at the end of six overs — the third-highest powerplay total in this edition of the tournament.
Abhishek reached his maiden T20 World Cup half-century from 26 balls. Although it marked the second-slowest T20I fifty of his career, it was significant for the opener, who had accumulated only 15 runs across four innings earlier in the competition.
He was dismissed for 55 soon after Kishan fell for 38. India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav ensured the scoring rate did not dip, striking 33 from just 13 deliveries to keep the run rate above ten.
In the closing stages, Hardik Pandya (50 not out off 23) and Tilak Verma (44 not out off 16) unleashed a flurry of boundaries, lifting India to 256/4 — their highest total in T20 World Cups.
The score also stands as the second-highest team total in tournament history, behind Sri Lanka national cricket team’s 260/6 against Kenya national cricket team in the inaugural 2007 edition. India’s previous best at a T20 World Cup had been 218 against England national cricket team in that same tournament.
Zimbabwe’s Chase Falls Short
On a batting-friendly pitch, India had to remain patient for breakthroughs. Bennett and Tadiwanashe Marumani added 44 for the opening wicket before Axar Patel removed Marumani for 20 in the seventh over.
Varun Chakravarthy, currently ranked the world No.1 T20 bowler, dismissed Dion Myers soon after. Bennett continued to anchor the innings and registered his third half-century of the 2026 tournament, reaching the milestone with a six off Jasprit Bumrah.
Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza chipped in with 31 from 21 balls before being dismissed by Arshdeep Singh.
Although wickets were not easy to come by, Zimbabwe never mounted a sustained charge at the imposing total. Arshdeep claimed two additional wickets late in the innings as Zimbabwe closed on 184/6, with Bennett unbeaten on 97.
