Shimron Hetmyer has emerged as West Indies’ standout performer in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, ranking among the tournament’s top run-scorers. On Sunday, during a virtual knockout clash against India, the left-hander etched his name into the record books by overtaking Pakistan opener Sahibzada Farhan in the list for the most sixes in a single edition of the tournament.

Heading into the contest, Hetmyer required two sixes to claim the milestone of “most sixes in a single T20 World Cup edition”. He reached the landmark emphatically, launching Varun Chakravarthy over the ropes to move past Farhan and take sole ownership of the record.

Hetmyer now sits on 19 sixes in the 2026 T20 World Cup, surpassing Farhan’s tally of 18, which was also achieved in the same edition.

Hetmyer’s aggressive approach has been central to West Indies’ campaign, with his power-hitting keeping the side in contention for a semi-final berth. Prior to the India fixture, he was level with Nicholas Pooran on 17 sixes. Two towering strikes during the match enabled him to move ahead of the Pakistan batter and set a new benchmark.

Besides Hetmyer and Pooran, West Indies legend Chris Gayle features on the list after striking 16 sixes in the 2012 edition, while Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz also recorded 16 maximums during the 2024 tournament.

Hetmyer’s Dream Run in T20 World Cup 2026

Hetmyer entered the global event in strong form and has continued that momentum while batting at No. 3 with a clear attacking brief. He is currently the fourth-highest run-scorer in the 2026 edition, accumulating 248 runs across seven innings at a strike rate of 186.47.

Throughout the tournament, the dynamic left-hander has consistently provided impetus at the top, setting up platforms for the middle order with brisk starts.

West Indies’ Momentum Shift Against India

In the Super 8 encounter between India and West Indies, Suryakumar Yadav won the toss and opted to field first. The decision paid immediate dividends as West Indies openers Roston Chase and Shai Hope found scoring difficult in the early stages.

Although Chase attempted to accelerate, Hope struggled to find rhythm, and the pair managed a slow 68-run opening partnership. After Hope’s dismissal, Hetmyer injected urgency into the innings with a rapid 27 off 12 deliveries.

His cameo, featuring one boundary and two sixes, briefly altered the tempo of the game. However, following his departure, India regained control, tightening the scoring rate and preventing West Indies from building sustained momentum.
