South Africa and New Zealand are poised for a landmark encounter in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 semi-finals, with the two sides set to clash on Wednesday at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

The Proteas arrive at the knockout stage after an unbeaten run through both the group phase and the Super Eights. South Africa topped their Super Eight group with authoritative displays that highlighted their batting strength and disciplined bowling attack. A routine chase against Zimbabwe concluded their second-round fixtures, while a dominant win over India reinforced their credentials as title contenders. After finishing runners-up in the previous edition, they now look to take the final step.

New Zealand’s route to the semi-finals has followed a different pattern. The BlackCaps opened their campaign with convincing victories over the United Arab Emirates, Afghanistan and Canada. A crucial Super Eight win against Sri Lanka strengthened their position, but a narrow loss to England in their final second-round match left qualification hinging on net run rate. Despite that stumble, New Zealand progressed and enter the semi-final with a balanced side prepared for a decisive contest.

Head-to-Head History

This match marks the first time South Africa and New Zealand will face each other in a T20 World Cup semi-final. While they have met four times in the group stages of the tournament, they have never crossed paths in a knockout fixture.

Their first T20 World Cup meeting came in 2007, with South Africa emerging victorious. The teams met again in 2009, 2014 and the current edition, with the Proteas winning on each occasion.

Eden Gardens Factor

Conditions in Kolkata could influence proceedings, particularly given New Zealand’s prior experience at Eden Gardens. The BlackCaps have played two T20Is at the venue. They defeated Bangladesh during the 2016 edition of the tournament but were beaten by 73 runs by India in a T20I series in November 2021.

South Africa, in contrast, have no completed 20-over match experience at the ground. Their only T20I against India there, in October 2015, was washed out.

However, several players from both squads have featured in Indian Premier League matches at Eden Gardens, adding an additional layer of familiarity ahead of this historic semi-final.
