Pakistan remain in the hunt for a semi-final berth at the T20 World Cup 2026 — and they have England to thank for it. In a crucial Super Eight fixture in Colombo on Friday, England defeated New Zealand by four wickets. Although the Three Lions had already secured their semi-final spot, their victory over the Blackcaps has reopened the qualification race for Pakistan.
With Sri Lanka already eliminated from the tournament, the England vs New Zealand contest directly impacted Pakistan’s prospects. Salman Agha and his side are now firmly back in contention for the second semi-final place from Super 8 Group 2.
New Zealand have completed their Super Eight campaign, meaning the remaining qualification slot will be decided between them and Pakistan.
Points Table and Net Run Rate Situation
The Blackcaps finished with three points from three matches and hold a Net Run Rate (NRR) of +1.390. Pakistan, meanwhile, have one point from two games and an NRR of -0.461, with one fixture still to play on Saturday.
If Pakistan defeat Sri Lanka in their final Super Eight match and manage to overtake New Zealand’s NRR, they will progress to the semi-finals with three points. Failing that, New Zealand will advance.
To surpass the Blackcaps on NRR, Pakistan must either:
- Win by 65 runs or more if they bat first, or
- Chase down the target within 13 overs if they bat second.
How the Scenario Unfolded
Earlier in the Super Eight stage, Pakistan’s match against New Zealand was washed out due to rain, resulting in one point for each team.
After that, New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka by 61 runs to move to three points. Pakistan, in contrast, suffered a two-wicket loss to England.
Had New Zealand beaten England on Friday, they would have climbed to five points and sealed their semi-final spot, eliminating Pakistan, who could have reached a maximum of three points. However, England’s victory has ensured that the race remains open.
If Pakistan overcome Sri Lanka in their final Super Eight fixture, they will be level with New Zealand on three points, and the team with the superior NRR will secure a place in the knockouts.
