Ryan Rickelton produced a landmark performance as Mumbai Indians faced Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium. Opening the innings for MI, he brought up his maiden IPL century and carved his name into the franchise’s history.

Batting in the first innings, Rickelton reached the three-figure mark in just 44 deliveries. The South African left-hander struck 9 fours and 7 sixes, registering the fastest century ever scored for Mumbai Indians in IPL history.

Rickelton Surpasses Varma and Jayasuriya

In doing so, Rickelton went past the previous benchmark jointly held by Tilak Varma and Sanath Jayasuriya. Varma had equalled the record only nine days earlier in IPL 2026, but Rickelton bettered both by reaching his hundred one ball quicker, taking sole ownership of the record.

Fastest centuries for Mumbai Indians in IPL:

  • 44 – Ryan Rickelton vs SRH, Mumbai (Wankhede), 2026
  • 45 – Sanath Jayasuriya vs CSK, Mumbai (Wankhede), 2008
  • 45 – Tilak Varma vs GT, Ahmedabad, 2026
  • 47 – Cameron Green vs SRH, Mumbai (Wankhede), 2023

Record-Breaking Run in MI Colours

Rickelton’s impact since joining Mumbai Indians has been rapid. Signed for IPL 2025 at a price of 1 crore, he has already amassed three centuries for the franchise across T20 competitions within two years — one in the IPL and two in SA20.

That tally has taken him ahead of Rohit Sharma in terms of most centuries for Mumbai Indians across T20 leagues.

Most centuries for MI across T20 leagues:

  • 3 – Ryan Rickelton
  • 2 – Rohit Sharma
  • 2 – Suryakumar Yadav
  • 2 – Tom Banton

Due to BCCI regulations, Indian players are restricted to IPL participation, meaning Rohit Sharma’s two centuries for the franchise have both come in that competition.

Rickelton’s innings also features prominently in multiple statistical categories:

  • 44 – Ryan Rickelton (MI), Mumbai (Wankhede), 2026
  • 47 – Cameron Green (MI), Mumbai (Wankhede), 2023

  • 114* – Sanath Jayasuriya
  • 112* – Quinton de Kock
  • 109* – Rohit Sharma
  • 105* – Rohit Sharma
  • 103* – Suryakumar Yadav

Opportunity Taken Amid Selection Shuffle

Rickelton’s season has unfolded in an eventful manner. He began IPL 2026 as MI’s preferred opener ahead of Quinton de Kock and made a steady start across the first five matches. However, inconsistency led to de Kock being brought into the side.

De Kock responded with a century in his first appearance of the season, prompting MI to persist with him in the lineup. For the ongoing match, though, an injury to de Kock opened the door for Rickelton’s return.

Rickelton’s century now leaves Mumbai Indians with a selection dilemma, as his performance strengthens his case to retain a place in the XI.
