Mumbai Indians (MI) produced a dominant all-round performance to defeat Gujarat Titans (GT) by 99 runs, with Tilak Varma’s sensational unbeaten century headlining a dramatic turnaround.

Tilak’s Stunning Knock Turns the Game

MI were under pressure at 103 for 4 in 14 overs before Tilak Varma transformed the innings with a remarkable acceleration. He finished unbeaten on 101, powering MI to 199 for 5 with a record-breaking surge in the final overs.

Tilak scored 82 runs in the last six overs — the most by any batter in that phase of an IPL innings — bringing up a century that matched Sanath Jayasuriya’s 45-ball effort as the joint-fastest for MI. Notably, he reached the milestone after not hitting a boundary in his first 20 balls.

Naman Dhir also played a crucial role earlier, scoring 45 off 32 balls from No. 3 when MI had slipped to 44 for 3, helping stabilize the innings before Tilak’s late assault.

GT Bowlers Start Strong but Lose Control

GT’s pace attack initially dominated, with Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada applying pressure in the powerplay. Rabada removed Danish Malewar, Quinton de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav with a disciplined spell, finishing with 3 for 33.

However, MI seized control in the latter half. Tilak capitalised on lapses in execution, particularly against Prasidh Krishna and Rashid Khan, as the bowlers struggled to maintain their plans during the death overs.

MI Bowlers Seal Comprehensive Win

The momentum carried into the second innings immediately, as Jasprit Bumrah struck with the first ball to claim his first wicket of the season.

GT never recovered from early setbacks, losing key wickets in the powerplay. Mitchell Santner removed Washington Sundar and Glenn Phillips in the same over, while Ashwani Kumar added to the collapse with four wickets.

AM Ghazanfar wrapped up the innings by dismissing Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada, as GT were bowled out for just 100, ending well short of MI’s total.

Momentum Shift for Mumbai Indians

This emphatic victory ended MI’s four-match losing streak and marked a significant turnaround in their campaign. Tilak Varma’s extraordinary innings not only lifted the team to a competitive total but also set the tone for a complete team performance that overwhelmed Gujarat Titans.
