Before IPL 2026, no batter had ever made 550 or more runs in a season while scoring at a strike rate above 200. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has now become the first player to achieve that feat, and he has done it at only 15 years old.
Sooryavanshi’s strike rate this season stands at 242.85, with 680 runs from 15 innings. The next-best mark belongs to Rilee Rossouw, who scored 623 runs at a strike rate of 192.28 in the 2022 T20 Blast.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continues to enter territory no IPL batter has reached before. On May 26, the IPL 2026 Eliminator between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) produced the latest example of his extraordinary season. Here is how his record-breaking innings unfold in numbers.
Before the match began, Sooryavanshi had already hit 53 sixes and needed seven more to move past the universal boss. The target looked difficult, but the 15-year-old dismantled the SRH attack and reached the milestone inside the powerplay.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Goes Past Chris Gayle
Batting first, RR raced to 57 runs in the opening four overs, driven by Sooryavanshi’s explosive start. The 15-year-old reached a 16-ball half-century, an innings that included seven sixes. With that seventh maximum, he overtook Chris Gayle for the most sixes in a single IPL season.

59 – Chris Gayle (RCB), 2012
52 – Andre Russell (KKR), 2019
51 – Chris Gayle (RCB), 2013
Notably, Gayle had set the previous record in 2012, when Sooryavanshi was just 1 year old.
Sooryavanshi Punishes Pat Cummins With Powerhitting
Sooryavanshi attacked from the start and made his intent clear immediately. The 15-year-old struck Pat Cummins for six off the final ball of the first over.
His biggest assault came in the third over, when he hit the Australia captain for three sixes in a row. The right-arm seamer was left stunned by the powerhitting, and Sooryavanshi only grew in confidence from that point. By the end of the powerplay, he had taken four sixes from Cummins’ bowling.

“I don’t think anyone’s ever seen a talent like this,” says SRH assistant coach James Franklin. “It’s freakish what he’s doing at the moment. To think that he’s potentially got 25 years left in the career is quite scary. He’s only going to get better, he’s only going to get stronger, he’s only going to get more mature with how he bats.”
