The India Squad for England ODI series has created plenty of discussion among fans after the latest squad announcements. While Shivam Dube ODI recall grabbed attention for the three-match ODI series against England, the biggest talking point has been why Sanju Samson was dropped from the T20I squad for the Zimbabwe tour.

India’s selectors have made a few bold decisions as they continue to build a strong squad for future tournaments while also managing the workload of senior players.

Why Sanju Samson Was Dropped

One of the biggest surprises in the latest squad announcement was Sanju Samson’s absence from the T20I squad for Zimbabwe.

Samson was one of India’s biggest heroes during the 2026 T20 World Cup. He finished as the Player of the Tournament after playing several match-winning innings, including an unbeaten 97 and two scores of 89. However, his form dipped soon after the tournament.

The wicketkeeper-batter managed scores of just 5 and 0 against Ireland before getting dismissed for 1 in the opening T20I against England. His poor run resulted in him losing his place in the playing XI, with teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi getting an opportunity.

This has led many fans to believe that the reason why Sanju Samson was dropped comes down to his recent lack of runs.

However, there is another side to the story. According to BCCI sources, Samson has only been rested as part of workload management. The selectors also wanted to test young players like Prabhsimran Singh and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi before the Asian Games later this year. Reports suggest Samson remains an important part of India’s long term plans.

Shivam Dube ODI Recall Boosts India

While Samson misses out on the Zimbabwe tour, Shivam Dube ODI recall has given the all-rounder another chance to cement his place in India’s fifty over setup.

Dube has been included in the India Squad for England ODI series after Nitish Kumar Reddy was ruled out with a left quadriceps injury. The injury created an opening, and Dube’s recent performances made him the obvious replacement.

The left-handed batter impressed during the T20Is against England, especially with his aggressive 42 off just 21 balls in the first match. His ability to clear the boundary regularly makes him a dangerous middle order option.

Apart from his batting, Dube also provides useful medium pace bowling. That extra bowling option could prove valuable in English conditions, giving captain Shubman Gill more flexibility during the series.

India Squad for England ODI Series

The ODI squad will be led by Shubman Gill, with Shreyas Iyer serving as vice captain.

The batting group includes Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, while KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan are the wicketkeepers.

The all-rounders are Shivam Dube, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar. The bowling attack features Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh and Gurnoor Brar.

Final Thoughts

The latest selections show that India are balancing immediate success with future planning. While discussions around why Sanju Samson was dropped are likely to continue, the management believes the wicketkeeper has simply been rested after a busy schedule.

At the same time, the Shivam Dube ODI recall offers the powerful all-rounder another opportunity to establish himself in the India Squad for England ODI series and strengthen his claim for a regular place in India’s ODI plans.
