Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Defines the Season
The biggest story of IPL 2026 was the rise of 15-year-old Rajasthan Royals batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The young opener delivered a sensational campaign, winning the Most Valuable Player award with 436.5 points and claiming the Orange Cap with 776 runs.
Sooryavanshi also won the Super Striker award with a strike rate of 237 and finished with the most sixes in the tournament, hitting 72. Despite being only in his second season with Rajasthan Royals, he also became the player with the most sixes in IPL history.

Even in a season dominated by batters, several bowlers made an impact. Sunrisers Hyderabad backed young domestic pacers Sakib Hussain and Praful Hinge, showing faith in emerging pace options.
Kagiso Rabada won the Purple Cap with 29 wickets, while Mohammed Siraj claimed the award for most dot balls with 172. Sai Sudharsan led the tournament in fours with 75.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar was also crucial to RCB’s title run, taking 28 wickets at an economy rate of 7.95. Although he did not win a major individual award, his role in Bengaluru’s success was significant.
A Record-Breaking Season
IPL 2026 produced remarkable batting numbers. The tournament saw 27,450 runs scored at a record run rate of 9.88 per over. There were 2,332 fours, 1,426 sixes, 15 individual centuries, 65 totals above 200, and 17 successful chases of 200 or more.
The Cricket Association of Bengal at Eden Gardens won the Pitch and Ground Award for regular venues, while the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala received the award for venues hosting fewer than four matches.
