Rohit, Rickelton Set the Tone
Chasing a demanding target, Mumbai Indians needed a strong start, and their openers delivered. Rohit Sharma led the charge with an aggressive innings, bringing up a 23-ball half-century, the fastest of his IPL career.
He set the tone early with a pull shot off Vaibhav Arora and continued to dominate, including attacking Varun Chakravarthy with both boundaries and sixes. At the other end, Ryan Rickelton maintained the tempo with a fluent 81, ensuring Mumbai stayed ahead of the required rate.
Kolkata Knight Riders struggled to contain the scoring, and the absence of Ajinkya Rahane from the field due to cramps early in the defence further added to their challenges.
KKR Post 220 After Strong Start
Earlier, Kolkata Knight Riders made full use of the conditions, with Rahane and Finn Allen providing an explosive start. A 26-run over off Hardik Pandya stood out during the powerplay.
Rahane top-scored with 67, while Raghuvanshi accelerated after a cautious start to reach a half-century. Despite the strong platform, KKR’s momentum dipped during a key middle phase.
Momentum Shift in Middle Overs
At the end of the 11th over, KKR were scoring at just under 12 runs per over. However, a slowdown between overs 12 and 14 saw them add only 19 runs.
Jasprit Bumrah played a key role during this period, using his yorkers to apply pressure, before Shardul Thakur dismissed Rahane in the 14th over. This phase proved costly, as KKR missed the opportunity to push their total further.
Bumrah and Thakur Deliver Key Contributions
Bumrah finished as the only bowler from either side to concede under nine runs per over, although his yorker execution varied, landing six of his 17 attempts accurately.
Thakur, making his debut for Mumbai Indians, stood out with the ball, claiming 3 for 39 and using variations effectively.
Mixed Returns for Debutants
Finn Allen impressed with a quick 37, while Allah Ghazanfar endured a difficult outing, conceding 51 runs in four overs. Cameron Green contributed 18 off 10 balls but did not bowl.
For Mumbai Indians, Sherfane Rutherford did not get an opportunity to bat, while Thakur delivered a strong performance on debut.
