Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has quickly become one of the most talked-about young players in modern cricket, with the 15-year-old showcasing fearless batting against top-level bowlers. His audacious strokeplay, including an eye-catching display against Jasprit Bumrah in IPL 2026, has underlined his rapid rise within a short span.
In just a year since making his IPL debut on April 19, 2025, Sooryavanshi has delivered performances that many seasoned batters take years to achieve, consistently capturing attention with his aggressive approach at the crease.
From early scouting to IPL breakthrough
Sooryavanshi’s journey began when he was identified by Rajasthan Royals’ Talent Identification Coordinator Akshay Karanje between 2022 and 2023, when he was only around 10 or 11 years old. Recognising his potential, Karanje alerted the franchise about the promising youngster.
Following that recommendation, Sooryavanshi was invited for trials ahead of the IPL 2025 season. His performances there convinced the team management that he was ready for the next level, despite his young age.
Further insight into his discovery was shared by former Rajasthan Royals director of cricket and current head coach Kumar Sangakkara, who explained how the franchise first tracked the player in 2023.
“Sooryavanshi has already shown himself to be a very special talent. In 2023, one of the Rajasthan Royals analysts sent through a text saying there’s a very special player we need to watch, get to trials, and look to sign.”
After monitoring him closely for about a year, Rajasthan Royals signed Sooryavanshi at the IPL 2025 mega auction for ₹1.1 crore, making him the youngest player to secure a contract in the league.
“And the first time I saw him live was after we had signed him, apart from watching some videos of him batting in the nets in Guwahati, batting against Jofra Archer and other seamers that we had. And he made it look very, very easy.”
Impact on the field
Sooryavanshi soon validated the franchise’s faith with impactful performances. His 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans in 2025 established him as a serious prospect and one of the standout young batters in the competition.
In IPL 2026, he continued his aggressive approach. In a rain-affected game against Mumbai Indians, he took on Jasprit Bumrah from the outset, striking a six off the very first ball he faced from the pacer and adding another maximum soon after. The sequence of two sixes in three deliveries highlighted his confidence against one of the leading bowlers in the game.
He had already made a strong start to the season with a 15-ball half-century against Chennai Super Kings in Guwahati, followed by a quick 31 off 18 balls against Gujarat Titans.
Performance and value
Sooryavanshi’s contributions have not been limited to individual moments. In the ongoing IPL 2026 season, his 14-ball 39 in the rain-shortened fixture against Mumbai Indians helped him reach 122 runs from 49 balls. He has maintained a strike rate of 248.97, with nearly 87% of his runs coming through boundaries.
His impact has also translated into strong value for the franchise. His total match value stands at ₹3.77 crore, compared to a contract cost of ₹23.57 lakh across appearances, reflecting a significant return on investment.
For Rajasthan Royals, Sooryavanshi offers an explosive option at the top of the order, providing early momentum in the powerplay and delivering performances that continue to draw attention both for his age and his ability.
