Scotland Women secured a landmark moment in their cricket history, defeating Ireland Women by 40 runs to claim their first-ever victory at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Inspired by the partnership between sisters Kathryn Bryce and Sarah Bryce, followed by a dominant display from their spin bowlers, Scotland produced a complete performance in Manchester.

The victory marked a significant milestone for Scottish cricket and provided the perfect start to their 2026 T20 World Cup campaign.

Scotland Recover After Difficult Start

After being invited to bat first under overcast skies, Scotland struggled to build momentum early on.

Ireland’s bowlers made excellent use of the conditions, with Aimee Maguire and Ava Canning keeping the scoring under control. Scotland lost both openers inside the powerplay as Katherine Fraser and Darcey Carter departed, leaving the side at 37/2 after six overs.

With the pitch offering assistance and boundaries proving difficult to find, Scotland needed a partnership to rebuild their innings.

Bryce Sisters Transform the Match

That rescue came through Scotland’s two most experienced players.

Captain Kathryn Bryce and wicketkeeper Sarah Bryce combined for a magnificent 106-run partnership that completely changed the course of the contest. The pair rotated strike intelligently before accelerating during the middle overs.

Sarah Bryce provided the early aggression, taking on Ireland’s spinners and striking a towering six during a crucial phase of the innings. Kathryn Bryce then took control, finding regular boundaries and bringing up her half-century from just 32 balls.

The partnership became Scotland’s first-ever fifty-plus stand at a Women’s T20 World Cup and laid the foundation for a competitive total.

Sarah eventually fell for an excellent 49, narrowly missing out on a deserved half-century, while Kathryn continued to lead from the front with a superb 60 from 39 deliveries.

Although Ireland fought back strongly at the death, Scotland still finished with a challenging 161/5.

Ava Canning was Ireland’s standout bowler, claiming 3/27.

Ireland Lose Early Momentum

Chasing 162, Ireland began positively through Amy Hunter, who looked the most fluent batter on either side during the opening stages of the innings.

However, Scotland struck important blows at regular intervals.

Captain Gaby Lewis struggled to accelerate and was eventually stumped off Katherine Fraser, while Hunter’s impressive knock of 39 ended when Fraser returned to clean bowl her in the 12th over.

At that point, Ireland still had a chance, but what followed completely shifted the match.

Gordon and Fraser Seal Victory

Experienced spinner Kirstie Gordon produced the decisive spell of the contest.

The left-armer ripped through Ireland’s middle order in the 13th over, claiming three wickets and reducing the chase to chaos. Rebecca Stokell, Leah Paul and Alice Tector all departed within the space of six deliveries as Ireland slumped from a competitive position to deep trouble.

Gordon finished with outstanding figures of 3/16, while Fraser matched her contribution with 3/19.

Although Orla Prendergast attempted to keep Ireland in the contest, the required rate continued to climb. Her run-out in the closing stages effectively ended any hopes of a comeback.

Scotland’s bowlers maintained control until the end, eventually dismissing Ireland for 121.

A Historic Day for Scotland

The victory represents a breakthrough moment for Scotland Women on the global stage.

Led brilliantly by Kathryn Bryce, supported by Sarah Bryce’s vital contribution, and backed by a disciplined spin attack, Scotland demonstrated the quality and composure required to compete at the highest level.

For Ireland, the defeat extended a frustrating record at the Women’s T20 World Cup, with the team still searching for its first victory in the tournament.

For Scotland, however, this was a day to remember. Their maiden T20 World Cup win is another significant step forward in the growth of Scottish women’s cricket and could provide the confidence needed for a memorable tournament campaign.
