Sri Lanka produced one of the biggest upsets of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, securing a five-wicket victory over New Zealand at Southampton. Chasing 151, Sri Lanka recovered from a difficult position thanks to a brilliant unbeaten half-century from Nilakshika Silva and a composed finishing effort from Kaushini Nuthyangana.

The victory gives Sri Lanka their first points of the tournament and leaves New Zealand facing a difficult road ahead after suffering back-to-back defeats.

New Zealand Post Competitive Total

After being asked to bat, New Zealand finished on 150/6, a total that looked competitive on a surface that offered some assistance to bowlers without being overly difficult for batting.

Experienced duo Sophie Devine and captain Melie Kerr played the key roles in the innings, both scoring 45 runs. Devine anchored the middle overs while Kerr added valuable runs after sharing a useful partnership with Georgia Plimmer.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers ensured New Zealand never gained complete control. Their spinners applied pressure throughout the innings and prevented the White Ferns from accelerating consistently during the final overs.

Kavisha Dilhari was particularly effective, claiming two wickets, while the rest of the attack chipped in with important breakthroughs to keep the total within reach.

Sri Lanka Stumble Early

The chase began steadily but quickly ran into trouble.

New Zealand’s bowlers struck regularly and reduced Sri Lanka to 55/4. At that stage, the defending champions appeared firmly in control, with the required run rate climbing above nine runs per over.

Chamari Athapaththu made 27 before falling to Bree Illing, while Nensi Patel impressed with the ball, picking up two crucial wickets and finishing with figures of 2/23.

New Zealand’s pressure between the fifth and ninth overs looked decisive as they removed four batters for just ten runs.

However, the match was about to change dramatically.

Nilakshika Produces a Career-Defining Knock

Walking to the crease with Sri Lanka in serious trouble, Nilakshika Silva delivered arguably the finest innings of her international career.

She initially focused on rebuilding the innings alongside Kavisha Dilhari, carefully rotating the strike and preventing the required rate from spiralling out of control. Their 50-run partnership restored hope to the Sri Lankan dressing room and shifted momentum back toward the chasing side.

As the innings progressed, Nilakshika began finding boundaries at crucial moments. A powerful six over midwicket and a series of well-timed fours ensured Sri Lanka remained within touching distance of the target.

Her unbeaten 54 from 37 balls combined composure, smart running between the wickets, and excellent shot selection under pressure.

Nuthyangana Delivers the Perfect Finish

While Nilakshika provided the foundation, Kaushini Nuthyangana delivered the finishing touch.

The wicketkeeper had already impressed behind the stumps earlier in the match, taking three catches and helping maintain pressure on New Zealand’s batting lineup.

With the bat, she produced the most important innings of her young international career.

Arriving at a tense stage of the chase, Nuthyangana played fearlessly, scoring an unbeaten 24 from just 14 balls. She found boundaries when needed but also excelled at rotating the strike and keeping Sri Lanka in control of the equation.

The pair added an unbroken 48 runs for the sixth wicket, guiding Sri Lanka home with two balls remaining and sparking jubilant celebrations.

Missed Chances Cost New Zealand

The most costly moment came when Bree Illing dropped Nilakshika early in her innings. At the time, Sri Lanka were under immense pressure and New Zealand had an opportunity to claim a fifth wicket in quick succession.

Several other missed chances and lapses in ground fielding allowed Sri Lanka to build momentum during the closing overs.

Those mistakes proved expensive in a match ultimately decided by fine margins.

Tournament Implications

The defeat leaves New Zealand in a difficult position. After losing their opening two matches, the defending champions now face must-win encounters against England, Scotland and Ireland if they hope to reach the knockout stage.

For Sri Lanka, the victory could prove transformative.

After opening the tournament with a defeat against England, they have now revived their campaign and moved into contention for a semi-final place. Their upcoming clash against West Indies has suddenly become one of the most important matches in their World Cup journey.

Thanks to the calmness of Nilakshika Silva and the finishing brilliance of Kaushini Nuthyangana, Sri Lanka now have momentum, belief, and one of the most memorable victories in their recent cricket history.
