Australia Women delivered a powerful statement ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 with a commanding 85-run victory over South Africa Women in a warm-up match at Arundel Castle Cricket Club Ground on June 4.
The match showcased Australia’s batting depth and disciplined bowling, highlighting why they remain one of the favorites heading into the global tournament.
Australia’s innings began on a positive note despite an early setback. Georgia Voll scored 16, while Beth Mooney played an aggressive knock of 25 off 15 balls, helping the team reach 74/2 inside the powerplay.
The momentum shifted decisively in Australia’s favor through a crucial partnership between Phoebe Litchfield and captain Ashleigh Gardner. Litchfield contributed 31 from 22 balls, while Gardner led from the front with a brilliant 66 off 38 deliveries, striking eight boundaries and a six.
After Litchfield’s dismissal, Gardner continued to dominate and found strong support from Georgia Wareham, who played a stunning late-overs innings. Wareham smashed 52 from just 29 balls, accelerating the scoring rate and pushing Australia past the 200-run mark.
Australia eventually posted a formidable total of 212/6 in 20 overs, with extras also contributing significantly to the score.
In response, South Africa struggled to keep up with the required run rate despite a solid effort from captain Laura Wolvaardt, who scored 47 from 39 balls.
Sune Luus added 17, but regular wickets prevented South Africa from building momentum. Dane van Niekerk, Nadine de Klerk, and Chloe Tryon all got starts but failed to convert them into impactful innings as the chase gradually slipped away.
South Africa finished on 127/6 in their 20 overs, falling well short of the target.
Australia’s bowling unit played a key role in sealing the win. Nicola Carey, Sophie Molineux, and Annabel Sutherland all contributed with disciplined spells, while Georgia Wareham and Alana King maintained pressure throughout the innings.
This comprehensive victory underlined Australia’s strength in all departments and sent a strong warning to other teams ahead of the tournament.
