Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad meet for the first time in IPL 2026 with both sides seeking crucial points, but from contrasting positions. With a batting-friendly surface expected at the Wankhede Stadium, the contest promises a high-scoring encounter between two teams known for their explosive line-ups.
MI Under Pressure Ahead of Crucial Fixture
Mumbai Indians enter the match in a difficult position, placed ninth on the points table with only two wins from seven games. Their latest defeat, a 103-run loss to Chennai Super Kings, stands as their heaviest in IPL history, leaving them close to a must-win scenario to stay in contention.
Their season has been marked by inconsistency, particularly in both batting and bowling. MI have scored the fewest runs in the competition (1173) and also hold the lowest powerplay total (366) among all teams. With only 33 wickets taken, their bowling returns have also been among the weakest.
The struggles are reflected in individual performances. Tilak Varma, their leading run-scorer, is positioned 31st in the batting charts. Suryakumar Yadav has managed 157 runs in seven matches at an average of 22.4, a significant drop from his previous season. Hardik Pandya (97) and Sherfane Rutherford (103) have also yet to find consistent form.
Despite the results, the team remains focused on improvement. “The atmosphere in the dressing room is good. We are taking each match positively, as positively as possible, and we will try to win each match. We are working on that, we are practising, everyone is doing well, so we are practising and working on our weaknesses,” said Ashwani Kumar.
SRH Carry Momentum into Mumbai
In contrast, Sunrisers Hyderabad arrive with strong momentum, having won four matches in a row after a slow start to the season. They have addressed early concerns around injuries and combinations, with Pat Cummins’ return and the emergence of Eshan Malinga and Sakib Hussain strengthening their bowling unit.
SRH’s recent record against MI has not been favourable, with only one win in their last six meetings and two victories in their last nine encounters at the Wankhede. However, their current form presents an opportunity to improve those numbers. A win would take them level with Royal Challengers Bengaluru on 12 points.
Batting Strength Sets SRH Apart
SRH have been the most productive batting side this season, scoring 1598 runs — 425 more than MI. They also lead across key metrics, including fifties (10 compared to MI’s 5), sixes (92 to 59), and average (29.59 to 26.06).
Their top order has been particularly effective, with contributions from Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Heinrich Klaasen, and Nitish Kumar Reddy. The only concern remains the form of Travis Head.
The bowling unit has also improved, with Cummins and emerging pacers Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain adding depth to what was once considered a weak area.

A high-scoring contest is likely, with the average first-innings score at the venue around 215 and the average winning total approximately 223. Three of the four first-innings totals here this season have exceeded 200, underlining the batting-friendly nature of the pitch.
