Bangladesh survived a determined challenge from tournament debutants Netherlands to secure a six-wicket victory in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 at Edgbaston. While the final result favored the more experienced side, the Dutch produced an impressive performance that pushed Bangladesh much harder than many expected.

Chasing 140 for victory, Bangladesh reached the target with six wickets in hand thanks to an aggressive half-century from Juairiya Ferdous and a composed finishing partnership between Sharmin Akhter and Shorna Akter.

Babette de Leede Anchors Netherlands Innings

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Netherlands struggled to build momentum early as Bangladesh struck regularly.

Phebe Molkenboer and Heather Siegers fell inside the powerplay, while Sterre Kalis was dismissed by Rabeya Khan, who claimed her 50th T20I wicket. With wickets falling around her, captain Babette de Leede took responsibility for holding the innings together.

The Dutch skipper gradually settled after a nervous start and produced a classy knock of 50 from 45 deliveries. She mixed sensible strike rotation with timely boundaries and ensured Netherlands remained competitive despite losing partners at regular intervals.

When Netherlands slipped to 76/5, de Leede continued to fight, collecting boundaries through the covers and working hard between the wickets. Although she was eventually run out while attempting a second run in the closing overs, her effort laid the foundation for a respectable total.

An unbeaten late stand between Iris Zwilling and Silver Siegers added valuable runs as Netherlands closed on 139/8 from their 20 overs.

Ferdous Takes Control of the Chase

Bangladesh’s response was driven by the fearless approach of opener Juairiya Ferdous.

The young batter attacked from the outset, targeting the leg side and regularly clearing the infield. After receiving an early reprieve, she made Netherlands pay by striking boundaries consistently during the powerplay.

Ferdous raced to her half-century from just 32 balls, hitting seven fours and two sixes. Her attacking innings gave Bangladesh a strong platform and ensured the required rate remained manageable throughout the chase.

However, the match took an unexpected turn after her dismissal.

Dutch Spinners Fight Back

Netherlands refused to fade away and produced an excellent middle-overs fightback.

Caroline de Lange removed Ferdous immediately after her fifty and then dismissed Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana in the same over. The Dutch spinners tightened the screws, creating pressure through accurate bowling and energetic fielding.

Silver Siegers dismissed Dilara Akter, while a sharp direct hit from Frederique Overdijk ran out Sobhana Mostary. Suddenly Bangladesh found themselves under pressure with the asking rate beginning to climb.

For a brief period, an upset looked possible.

Sharmin and Shorna Finish the Job

With 55 runs still required from the final eight overs, Sharmin Akhter and Shorna Akter steadied Bangladesh’s innings.

Sharmin played the more aggressive role, finding crucial boundaries whenever Netherlands threatened to build momentum. Shorna provided calm support at the other end, rotating strike effectively and ensuring Bangladesh avoided further setbacks.

Their partnership gradually shifted control back toward Bangladesh. Despite Netherlands continuing to field brilliantly and rotate their bowlers cleverly, the experienced pair remained composed.

Shorna eventually struck the winning runs to complete Bangladesh’s highest successful run chase in Women’s T20 World Cup history.

Netherlands Leave Strong Impression

Although they fell short of a famous upset, Netherlands showed exactly why they deserve their place on the global stage. De Leede’s captain’s innings, disciplined spin bowling, and excellent fielding created several uncomfortable moments for Bangladesh.

For Bangladesh, the victory was important but far from straightforward. Ferdous’ explosive fifty proved decisive, while Sharmin and Shorna demonstrated the composure needed to close out a tricky chase.

The result gives Bangladesh valuable points, but Netherlands emerged from the contest with plenty of positives and the confidence that they can challenge more established teams throughout the tournament.
