Jasprit Bumrah is set to have his involvement in T20 cricket restricted following the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly taking steps to manage his workload.

Bumrah played a decisive role in India’s title-winning campaign, delivering standout performances as the Suryakumar Yadav-led side defeated New Zealand in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium. However, with the IPL 2026 approaching, the Indian board has decided to scale back his appearances in the shortest format soon after the tournament’s conclusion.

Bumrah’s Strong T20 World Cup Campaign

The right-arm fast bowler enjoyed a memorable run during the T20 World Cup on home soil. Across eight matches, he claimed 14 wickets at an economy rate of 6.21 and a strike rate of 12, underlining his impact in India’s successful campaign.

Despite these performances, the BCCI is believed to have opted for a cautious approach regarding his T20 commitments in the lead-up to IPL 2026.

Focus Shifts Towards ODIs and Tests

Following their T20 World Cup triumph, India are expected to begin preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, scheduled to be held in Africa. Head coach Gautam Gambhir has indicated that the team intends to begin planning for the tournament without delay.

Given Bumrah’s importance to India’s bowling attack in white-ball cricket, he is expected to play a key role in ODI assignments, particularly in seam-friendly conditions anticipated during the upcoming World Cup cycle.

With a history of injury concerns, the BCCI is reportedly keen to monitor his workload closely. According to a report by PTI, the board plans to utilise Bumrah primarily in the longer formats, with the fast bowler likely to feature in most ODI fixtures leading up to the World Cup.

The same report also states that India are prioritising their campaign in the current World Test Championship. Alongside ODIs, Bumrah is expected to be part of the majority of India’s Test matches as the Shubman Gill-led side targets a place in the final.

To reduce the risk of injuries, the board is said to be limiting Bumrah’s involvement in T20 cricket until the completion of the 2027 World Cup cycle.

“Obviously Bumrah’s fitness is as always key to any of India’s global campaign and hence the Indian team management will have to be very careful and prioritise the formats. Keep Test cricket aside, which he will obviously play, but in the 50-over World Cup cycle, he will concentrate more on ODIs. There will be around 30-35 odd games and one can’t take chances,” a BCCI source told PTI.

Uncertainty Over IPL Participation

The workload management decision has also raised questions about Bumrah’s availability for IPL 2026. Traditionally, he has been a regular feature for Mumbai Indians.

However, if the BCCI advises the franchise to carefully manage his workload, Bumrah could be rested for selected matches or used strategically during the tournament.
