India’s World Cup Campaign Ends in Heartbreak
India’s wait for a first ICC Women’s T20 World Cup title will continue after another painful tournament exit.
A must-win group-stage match against Australia at Lord’s ended in defeat, eliminating the Women in Blue at the same stage for the second consecutive edition after their 2024 exit.
India struggled throughout the campaign to identify their strongest combination and preferred playing XI. Several players were unable to produce consistent performances when the pressure increased.
Even so, there was genuine belief that India could recover against Australia, secure the victory they needed and advance to the semi-finals. That hope ultimately ended in disappointment for the large number of Indian supporters inside the famous London venue.
Record Crowd Fills Lord’s With Indian Support
A total of 27,163 spectators attended the match at Lord’s, setting a new attendance record for a group-stage fixture in ICC Women’s T20 World Cup history. The previous record had been established on Saturday, June 27, 2026, when 21,018 supporters watched England face New Zealand at The Oval.
South Africa played Bangladesh earlier in the day, with all four teams still in contention for the semi-finals. Most India supporters were naturally hoping Bangladesh could produce an upset.
Bangladesh were unable to win, but South Africa’s narrow victory still left India with a clear route to qualification: beat Australia and progress.
The atmosphere was lively well before India’s match began. During the South Africa-Bangladesh contest, every Bangladesh boundary and each South African wicket was greeted by loud reactions.
Bangladesh fans made their presence felt, but it was also clear that India’s supporters were following the result closely.
Once India and Australia took the field, the Indian crowd drastically outnumbered the Australian support.
It was another example of the relationship between Indian cricket teams and their fans. Whether the Men in Blue or Women in Blue are playing, supporters regularly arrive in significant numbers.
Harmanpreet’s Late Charge Lifts the Crowd
Every Indian run, boundary and six received a huge response from the stands.
Even when the innings began to lose momentum, the chanting continued. The biggest reaction came in the final over, when captain Harmanpreet Kaur struck three consecutive sixes.
Her late hitting increased India’s total and transformed the energy around Lord’s.
Australia appeared unusually unsettled in the field and dropped several catches as the pressure from the crowd continued to rise.
Belief increased further when Renuka Singh Thakur dismissed Georgia Voll early in Australia’s chase.
After a quieter period, two quick wickets again raised hopes that India might produce a dramatic victory.
Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner then built the century partnership that ultimately decided the contest. Even during that stand, the crowd continued supporting India and waiting for one final breakthrough.
The wicket eventually arrived, but by then it was too late to significantly affect the result.
The silence following the final outcome reflected the depth of the disappointment.
Australia Players Praise the Lord’s Atmosphere
Perry acknowledged the contribution made by the supporters after the match.
“We are really appreciative of the atmosphere and the crowd. They are phenomenal, they are passionate and just to be part of that, whether they are for you or against you, it’s awesome.”
Gardner expressed a similar view.
“The expectation when you play India is that there are going to be a lot more Indian supporters,” she said. “So, like Pez says, it’s amazing that they are coming out to watch these games. Just to have the support is quite incredible. A few Aussies were out there in the crowd, which is really nice. But the expectation is always that there is going to be a heavy Indian support base, and it’s a good thing.”
Australia captain Sophie Molineux also highlighted the volume of support inside the stadium.
“It was a really loud crowd. I reckon 90% of them might have been Indian fans.”
The scale of the Indian support was not surprising given the country’s large diaspora across England.
The fans met every expectation, even if the team could not deliver the result they wanted.
Supporters of every generation were present, ranging from babies to elderly people. Many left Lord’s disappointed and some were frustrated, but those emotions reflected how deeply they cared about the team.
India had fallen short on the field, but their supporters had not.
That commitment had been visible throughout the competition. Following India’s defeat against South Africa in Manchester, fans remained inside the ground to applaud the players despite the disappointing result.
India also received extraordinary support during the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup at home, and the historic title victory only strengthened the connection between the team and its followers.
India may have another opportunity to challenge for the trophy at the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2028.
Until then, the tournament at Lord’s provided another reminder that while trophies may define teams, supporters give the sport its identity. Through success and disappointment, they remain at the heart of Indian cricket.
