England star Jos Buttler has moved past Chris Gayle to become the second-highest run-scorer in the history of T20 cricket.
The milestone came while Buttler was representing Manchester Super Giants against London Spirit in The Hundred 2026 at Lord’s on Thursday.
Although the wicketkeeper-batter scored only 16 runs from 11 deliveries, including one four and one six, the innings was enough to take him beyond Gayle’s career tally.
Buttler Moves Into Second Place
Buttler has now scored 14,572 runs in 487 T20 innings at a strike rate of 146.74.
His remarkable record includes 102 half-centuries and nine hundreds, underlining his consistency and impact across domestic leagues and international cricket.

Gayle, widely regarded as one of the greatest T20 batters of all time, has dropped to third place with 14,562 runs from 455 innings. The former West Indies opener finished his career with a strike rate of 144.75, alongside 88 fifties and a record 22 centuries.

The overall record remains in the possession of West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard.
Pollard has accumulated 14,803 runs from 663 innings at a strike rate of 151.02, including 70 half-centuries and two hundreds. Buttler now trails him by 231 runs in the race for top spot.

Buttler has also enjoyed a highly successful career for England in T20 Internationals.
Across 160 appearances, he has scored 4,212 runs at a strike rate of 148.93, including 28 half-centuries and two centuries.
He is the third-highest run-scorer in men’s T20I cricket, behind Pakistan’s Babar Azam with 4,596 runs and India’s Rohit Sharma with 4,231.
Buttler is currently England’s leading T20I run-scorer and remains the only player from the country to pass both the 3,000-run and 4,000-run marks in the format.
Former captain Eoin Morgan occupies second place on England’s list with 2,458 runs from 115 matches.

As England captain, he led the team to victory at the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia, where England defeated Pakistan in the final.
He became only the second England captain to lift the trophy after Paul Collingwood, who guided the team to its first T20 World Cup title in 2010 with victory over Australia in the final in the West Indies.
With Buttler now only 231 runs behind Pollard, the England batter has a realistic opportunity to become the leading run-scorer in T20 history.
