The decisive phase of IPL 2026 got underway in style on May 26, as defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) faced Gujarat Titans (GT) in Qualifier 1.

The 19th season of the Indian Premier League has once again delivered huge scores, clean six-hitting, and a constant flow of boundaries.

IPL 2026 has also turned into the most aggressive batting campaign the tournament has ever seen. Teams went hard throughout the league stage, lifting scoring rates to new heights and making even totals above 220 look far from safe.

The league-stage run rate stood at 9.85, the highest ever recorded in IPL history. Targets of more than 220 have been chased successfully nine times this season alone, while only five such chases had been completed across the previous 18 editions combined.

With batting records rising throughout the competition, the battle to end the season as the leading run-scorer has become one of the major storylines heading into the playoffs. At this stage, every remaining innings could make a crucial difference.

The Orange Cap race in IPL 2026 is therefore becoming more intense as the tournament moves closer to its conclusion, with several batters still fighting for the No. 1 position.

The Orange Cap is given to the batter who finishes as the highest run-scorer of the season, making it one of the most valued individual honours in the Indian Premier League.

This year’s edition has already seen several outstanding batting displays, including nine centuries.

Gujarat Titans could still feature in two more matches, while Rajasthan Royals or Sunrisers Hyderabad may have three more games left if they qualify for the final. Virat Kohli and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, however, have already secured a place in the final, which means the RCB opener has only one more innings to increase his total.

List of players still in contention for the Orange Cap after the IPL 2026 league stage

5. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (Rajasthan Royals) – 583 runs

Perhaps the most surprising name among the top contenders, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ended the IPL 2026 league phase in fifth place in the Orange Cap race. The 15-year-old has scored 583 runs at a strike rate of 232.27, the best strike rate among all batters in the top five.

The highly rated Bihar batter has already struck one century and three half-centuries in his debut IPL campaign, producing a season that has stunned the cricketing world.

4. Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) – 600 runs

Virat Kohli, one of the most followed names on the leaderboard, is once again firmly involved in the fight for the Orange Cap. Kohli remains among the few players to have taken part in all 19 editions of the Indian Premier League.

As RCB push for consecutive IPL titles, the ‘King’ of the tournament has made 600 runs so far this season at a career-best strike rate of 164.38.

3. Heinrich Klaasen (Sunrisers Hyderabad) – 606 runs

Heinrich Klaasen is placed third with 606 runs, scored at a strike rate of 159.47, along with six half-centuries. This has arguably been the strongest IPL season of Klaasen’s career.

The Proteas wicketkeeper-batter has played a central role for Sunrisers Hyderabad and has been their most dependable performer throughout the campaign.

2. Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans) – 618 runs

Newly appointed India captain Shubman Gill has enjoyed an impressive season while leading Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026.

The GT skipper has scored 618 runs at a strike rate of 159.27, including six half-centuries. He has balanced his captaincy responsibilities with consistent and aggressive batting at the top of the order.

1. Sai Sudharsan (Gujarat Titans) – 652 runs

Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill’s opening partner at Gujarat Titans, currently sits at the top of the run-scoring table.

The GT opener finished with 638 runs from 14 matches at an average of 46.57 and a strike rate of 157.86, including one century and seven half-centuries. After winning the Orange Cap in IPL 2025, he is now aiming to claim the award in back-to-back seasons.

What Makes the Race Interesting

With Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru already deep into the playoffs and Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals still alive, the contenders will get additional opportunities to add to their tallies.

However, with limited matches left, the margin for error is extremely small. A single big innings could completely reshape the leaderboard.
