Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2026 campaign has officially come to an end after the five-time champions suffered a narrow defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur on Sunday.

The match went down to the final ball, with RCB holding their nerve in a tense finish to complete a dramatic win. The result ended MI’s remaining playoff hopes, leaving them with eight defeats from 11 matches.

Mumbai Indians Exit Playoff Race

Mumbai needed to win all of their remaining league matches to stay alive in the race for the playoffs, but RCB stopped them in a closely fought contest.

After winning the toss, RCB chose to bowl first, and the decision worked early as Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck key blows. He removed Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, leaving MI under pressure.

Naman Dhir and Tilak Varma then steadied the innings with an 82-run partnership, giving Mumbai a platform to recover. However, RCB fought back with wickets at important moments, and MI were unable to finish strongly, eventually being restricted to 166.

In response, RCB suffered an early setback when Virat Kohli was dismissed for another duck. Rajat Patidar and Devdutt Padikkal also fell cheaply, leaving the chase in trouble.

Krunal Pandya, promoted to No. 5, then rebuilt the innings alongside Jacob Bethell. Krunal took charge of the chase, completed his half-century, and kept RCB in contention.

His dismissal late in the innings brought tension back into the match, but Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s six in the final over helped RCB complete the chase and confirmed Mumbai Indians’ elimination from IPL 2026.

MI’s IPL 2026 Campaign

Mumbai Indians entered the season with a strong squad on paper, featuring several high-profile batters and bowlers. However, their performances on the field failed to match expectations.

Hardik Pandya’s side began the campaign with a convincing win over Kolkata Knight Riders, but momentum quickly faded. MI then lost four matches in a row, with Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings all handing them damaging defeats.

They briefly revived hopes with a win over Gujarat Titans, but three more consecutive losses severely weakened their qualification chances. A victory over Lucknow Super Giants kept them mathematically alive, but the defeat to RCB ended their campaign.

Key Players Struggle for Form

Several senior players failed to deliver consistently for Mumbai Indians this season. Jasprit Bumrah endured a difficult campaign, taking only 3 wickets in 11 matches at an average of 109.67.

His lack of wickets hurt MI badly, particularly in the death overs, where the team struggled to apply pressure.

Suryakumar Yadav also had a disappointing season. Across 11 matches, he managed 195 runs at an average of 17.73 and a strike rate of 144. His inability to produce quick middle-order innings affected Mumbai’s ability to accelerate at crucial stages.

Mumbai Indians’ early exit reflects a season where individual form, team balance and execution all fell short of expectations.
