Mumbai Indians returned to winning ways with a six-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants in a high-scoring encounter, chasing down 229 in 18.4 overs at the Wankhede Stadium.
The result ended MI’s three-match losing streak, while LSG suffered their sixth consecutive defeat to remain at the bottom of the table.
MI Restrict LSG After Pooran Blitz
Lucknow Super Giants looked set for a bigger total after Nicholas Pooran’s explosive 63 off 21 balls. However, Mumbai managed to pull things back effectively in the closing stages, conceding only one boundary in the final three overs to limit LSG to 228 for 5.
Pooran’s innings came at No. 3, where he had scored most of his runs in the previous season. His aggressive strokeplay saw him reach his half-century in just 16 balls, having struck multiple sixes in a dominant display before falling to a bouncer from Corbin Bosch.
Mitchell Marsh added 44, while Himmat Singh remained unbeaten on 40 and Aiden Markram contributed 31 not out, but the late slowdown meant LSG finished short of a potentially bigger total.
Rohit and Rickelton Set the Platform
Mumbai’s chase was built on a commanding 143-run opening stand between Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton. Rohit, returning after missing five matches due to a hamstring injury, scored 84 off 44 balls, while Rickelton made 83 off 32 deliveries.
The pair guided MI to 71 without loss in the powerplay before accelerating further. Rohit reached his half-century in 27 balls and continued to dominate, taking on both pace and spin before falling in the 14th over.
Rickelton maintained the momentum, bringing up his fifty in just 22 balls, with a large portion of his runs coming in boundaries. His aggressive approach ensured the required rate remained under control throughout the innings.
Comfortable Finish for MI
By the time Rohit was dismissed, the equation had been reduced to 52 off 36 balls. Despite losing Rickelton shortly after, Mumbai remained firmly in control and completed the chase with eight balls to spare.
The successful pursuit of 229 marked the highest chase at the Wankhede Stadium, surpassing the previous best of 220 by Mumbai Indians against Kolkata Knight Riders earlier in the season.
LSG Struggles Continue
Lucknow’s defeat extended a difficult run, leaving them rooted at the bottom of the standings. Despite strong individual performances, their inability to close out matches has been a recurring issue.
Mumbai, meanwhile, gained momentum with a much-needed victory, powered by a dominant top-order display and disciplined bowling.
