Chennai Super Kings have made some costly calls during IPL 2026, but bringing Urvil Patel into the playing XI has proved to be a major success. After Ayush Mhatre was ruled out with injury, CSK needed a like-for-like option, and Patel stepped in to deliver a stunning impact.

In the match between CSK and Lucknow Super Giants at Chepauk, the Super Kings were chasing a challenging target of 204. Against a strong LSG bowling attack, the chase was never expected to be straightforward.

Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad gave CSK a strong start, but once Samson was dismissed, Urvil walked in and completely changed the course of the match.

Urvil Patel Hits Joint-Fastest IPL Fifty

Urvil showed no hesitation against the LSG attack, taking on the bowlers from the outset. Batting at No. 3, he attacked Avesh Khan and then Digvesh Rathi, racing to a half-century in just 13 balls.

That effort equalled the record for the fastest fifty in IPL history.

Fastest IPL fifties by balls:

  • 13 – Yashasvi Jaiswal (RR) vs KKR, Kolkata, 2023
  • 13 – Urvil Patel (CSK) vs LSG, Chennai, 2026
  • 14 – KL Rahul (KXIP) vs DC, Mohali, 2018
  • 14 – Pat Cummins (KKR) vs MI, Pune, 2022
  • 14 – Romario Shepherd (RCB) vs CSK, Bengaluru, 2025

At one point, Urvil had a chance to move past Yashasvi Jaiswal’s all-time mark, but he narrowly missed the outright record by one ball.

Fastest Fifty by a CSK Batter

Urvil’s innings also became the fastest half-century ever scored by a Chennai Super Kings batter in the IPL. He broke the previous CSK record held by Suresh Raina, who had made a 16-ball fifty against PBKS in 2014.

Fastest fifties for CSK in IPL:

  • 13 – Urvil Patel vs LSG, Chennai, 2026
  • 16 – Suresh Raina vs PBKS, Mumbai (Wankhede), 2014
  • 19 – Moeen Ali vs RR, Mumbai (Wankhede), 2022
  • 19 – Ajinkya Rahane vs MI, Mumbai (Wankhede), 2023
  • 19 – Dewald Brevis vs GT, Ahmedabad, 2025

Five Sixes in a Row Against LSG

From the moment he arrived at the crease, Urvil looked determined to put LSG under pressure. He was especially severe on Avesh and Digvesh, striking five consecutive sixes to swing the match firmly in CSK’s favour.

He hit Avesh for three straight sixes off the fourth, fifth and sixth balls of the fifth over, before following up with two more sixes off Digvesh. The sequence put him close to the rare landmark of six sixes in a row, but he fell just short.

Most consecutive sixes by a batter in IPL:

  • 6 – Riyan Parag (RR) vs KKR, Kolkata, 2025
  • 5 – Chris Gayle (RCB) vs PW, Bengaluru, 2012
  • 5 – Kieron Pollard (MI) vs SRH, Mumbai (Wankhede), 2013
  • 5 – Rinku Singh (KKR) vs GT, Ahmedabad, 2023
  • 5 – Urvil Patel (CSK) vs LSG, Chennai, 2026

Urvil’s record-equalling knock not only powered CSK’s chase but also announced him as one of the most explosive batting stories of IPL 2026.
