Chennai Super Kings registered an eight-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians, completing a second win over them in IPL 2026 and pushing them closer to elimination. Chasing 160, CSK made light work of the target thanks to unbeaten half-centuries from Ruturaj Gaikwad and Kartik Sharma.

Opting to bowl on pitch No. 5, CSK’s bowlers used the conditions effectively to restrict Mumbai Indians to 159 for 7. By consistently hitting good and hard lengths on a two-paced surface, they prevented MI from sustaining momentum despite a strong start.

MI Start Fast but Lose Momentum

Mumbai Indians began aggressively, hitting seven sixes in the powerplay, with Ryan Rickelton contributing five of them. However, the scoring was tempered by 19 dot balls in the same phase, limiting overall progress.

Rickelton and Naman Dhir helped MI reach 57 for 1 after six overs, putting pressure on the CSK attack. Mukesh Choudhary conceded 25 runs in his three powerplay overs, while debutant spinner Prashant Veer endured a tough start, being hit for three sixes by Rickelton in his first over.

CSK Bowlers Regain Control

CSK’s uncapped bowlers played a key role in pulling things back. Ramakrishna Ghosh impressed on debut, dismissing Suryakumar Yadav for 21 off 12 balls with a hard-length delivery that induced a catch at sweeper cover. He finished with figures of 1 for 24 in three overs.

Noor Ahmad provided crucial support, removing left-handers Rickelton and Tilak Varma. Anshul Kamboj also made an impact, picking up three wickets, including that of Hardik Pandya, who managed 18 off 23 balls.

Naman Dhir top-scored for MI with 57 off 37 balls but struggled to accelerate in the middle overs, particularly against spin. After their explosive start, Mumbai managed just three sixes in the final 14 overs, eventually finishing on 159 for 7.

Gaikwad and Kartik Take Charge

Chennai’s chase began with an early setback as Sanju Samson fell to Jasprit Bumrah in the second over. After a reprieve earlier in the over when Will Jacks dropped a catch, Bumrah eventually found Samson’s edge, with Rickelton completing the dismissal.

Following the early wickets of Samson and Urvil Patel, Gaikwad steadied the innings alongside Kartik. Gaikwad set the tone by attacking Trent Boult for two fours and a six in the third over and went on to register consecutive half-centuries.

Kartik played an equally important role, taking on AM Ghazanfar’s spin and scoring 54 not out. His aggressive approach ensured CSK maintained control of the chase.

Comfortable Finish for CSK

With both batters in command, CSK cruised towards the target without further setbacks. Kartik sealed the win with a reverse-scoop boundary off Boult, completing the chase with ease and sparking celebrations among the home crowd at Chepauk.

The win marked CSK’s fourth victory in nine matches, lifting them to sixth place in the standings.
