The battle for the Purple Cap in the Indian Premier League 2026 intensified after Chennai Super Kings defeated Mumbai Indians at Chepauk on Friday night, bringing fresh movement at the top of the wicket-taking charts.

Purple Cap Leaderboard

Bhuvneshwar Kumar had appeared to pull clear of the field after reaching 17 wickets during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s match against Gujarat Titans on Thursday.

However, Anshul Kamboj quickly closed the gap following CSK’s next outing. After a brief lull — including a wicketless performance on April 26 — Kamboj responded strongly against MI, picking up three wickets to take his tally to 17 for the season.

While both bowlers are now level on wickets, Bhuvneshwar continues to hold the Purple Cap due to a better economy rate, maintaining 7.54 compared to Kamboj’s 8.49.

Close behind the leading pair are:

  • Jofra Archer (Rajasthan Royals) – 15 wickets
  • Eshan Malinga (Sunrisers Hyderabad) – 15 wickets
  • Kagiso Rabada (Gujarat Titans) – 14 wickets

A further six bowlers have already reached double figures in wickets, underlining the competitiveness of this year’s contest.

Orange Cap Leaderboard

With the bat, Sanju Samson had a quiet outing, scoring 11, but remains the highest-placed batter from CSK and MI, sitting ninth after moving ahead of Ishan Kishan.

The top of the run-scoring charts remains unchanged:

  • KL Rahul (Delhi Capitals) – 433 runs
  • Abhishek Sharma (SRH) – 425 runs
  • Heinrich Klaasen (SRH) – 414 runs
  • Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (RR) – 404 runs

Also among the leading group are:

  • Virat Kohli (RCB) – 379 runs
  • Shubman Gill (GT) – 373 runs
  • B Sai Sudharsan (GT) – 328 runs
  • Prabhsimran Singh (Punjab Kings) – 346 runs

Key Takeaways

  • Kamboj matches Bhuvneshwar on 17 wickets
  • Bhuvneshwar retains the Purple Cap on economy rate
  • Strong competition continues among top five bowlers
  • Rahul leads the Orange Cap standings with 433 runs

With several matches still to be played, both leaderboards remain highly competitive as teams push towards the latter stages of the season.
