On a windy evening disrupted by a dust storm, Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar produced a masterclass in disciplined fast bowling, reducing Delhi Capitals to a remarkable 13 for 6 in the powerplay on April 27.
While the numbers — seven wickets shared between them — underline their dominance, the real impact lay in how they executed their plans with consistency and control to dismantle the opposition.
Craft Over Flash
Bhuvneshwar’s spell highlighted the art of subtle variation. One delivery to Sahil Parakh swung away after pitching on a good length, beating the outside edge. The follow-up, however, was even more telling — an inswinging yorker that crashed into the stumps, suggesting a clear understanding of the batter’s response.
Although he generated notable swing, including one delivery that moved significantly in the air, it was his ability to repeatedly hit the same areas that stood out. By maintaining a disciplined length, he induced mistakes from batters like Axar Patel and Tristan Stubbs, drawing them into false shots.
Hazlewood’s Relentless Accuracy
At the other end, Hazlewood complemented Bhuvneshwar with a similarly methodical approach. Using his trademark hard length, he dismissed key batters including Nitish Rana and KL Rahul, while occasionally mixing in fuller deliveries in a tight channel outside off stump.
His execution was marked by control, with no extras conceded, as he consistently operated within a precise line and length.
Reflecting on his performance, Hazlewood explained his approach: “You wanted the batter to try and hit the ball back down the wicket and play in the V. I felt like from that length and that line, a nice straight line, that was probably the most was in the wicket. And then obviously the short ball was nice as well. So it was just about the accuracy of the short ball in particular. But I think, no matter where you pitched, it sort of ended up at the right height. It was one of those wickets,” he said.
Reading Conditions Early
Both bowlers demonstrated their ability to quickly assess conditions and adapt accordingly. Within the opening overs, they identified the assistance available and committed to a clear plan, executing it with precision throughout the spell.
Their approach was not about extravagant variations but about maintaining pressure through consistency — turning what might appear routine into a highly effective strategy.
A Clinical Display
On a challenging night, Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar combined to deliver a performance defined by accuracy and discipline. Their ability to repeat lengths and control movement left Delhi Capitals struggling to respond, as RCB’s new-ball pair showcased how simplicity, when executed perfectly, can be decisive.
