Sunrisers Hyderabad produced a dominant all-round display to defeat Delhi Capitals by 47 runs, riding on a remarkable unbeaten 135 from Abhishek Sharma in a high-scoring encounter.
Batting through the full 20 overs for the first time in an IPL innings, Abhishek paced his knock expertly to finish unbeaten on 135 off 68 balls. His effort powered SRH to a commanding 242/2, with valuable contributions from Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen providing added momentum. The victory lifted SRH to joint second place alongside Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals, though both teams have a game in hand.
Abhishek Reaches Major Milestones
The innings marked Abhishek’s ninth T20 century, bringing him level with Virat Kohli for the most hundreds by an Indian in the format. Only three players have scored more T20 centuries overall.
He also matched his own record for the most sixes in an innings by an SRH batter, hitting ten, while registering his second entry among the top five highest IPL scores.
Measured Start Sets the Platform
For the second consecutive match, Abhishek and Travis Head opted for a controlled start. After beginning with 26 without loss in the first three overs, they gradually shifted gears, showing awareness of the team’s middle-order limitations and the strength of their bowling attack.
Abhishek accelerated from 12 off 7, targeting Lungi Ngidi’s variations before taking on Nitish Rana. Two consecutive sixes off Rana signaled the shift in momentum, and SRH ended the powerplay at 67/0 despite the relatively cautious start.
Middle Overs Surge
Following Head’s dismissal, Abhishek continued to dominate alongside Kishan. The pair attacked Kuldeep Yadav, collecting 22 runs in the 11th over, before maintaining pressure against the seamers.
Rana’s return to the attack proved costly, as Abhishek plundered 23 runs in an over to bring up his century in just 47 balls. It was another rapid milestone in a career where all but one of his T20 hundreds have come in under 50 deliveries.
Klaasen Provides Late Acceleration
At 115 after 15 overs, Abhishek looked set for an even bigger score but slowed slightly, managing 20 runs off his final 17 balls. Klaasen, however, ensured SRH finished strongly with a blistering 37 off 13 deliveries, while Kishan added a quick 25 off 13 to take the total beyond 240.
DC’s Chase Falls Short
Chasing 243, Delhi Capitals faced a daunting task against SRH’s disciplined bowling attack. Nitish Rana led the resistance with 57, supported by Sameer Rizvi’s 41, but the required rate continued to climb.
The game tilted decisively when Eshan Malinga and Sakib Hussain struck in quick succession across the 10th and 11th overs, reducing DC to a difficult equation of 137 from 58 balls.
Early Pressure and Middle-Order Collapse
Dilshan Madushanka impressed on debut, swinging the ball early and removing Pathum Nissanka. Despite efforts from Rana and KL Rahul to steady the innings, SRH’s bowlers maintained control.
Hussain dismissed Rahul, while Malinga produced a crucial spell, removing Rana and David Miller in the same over to leave DC reeling. His variations, including reverse swing and slower balls, proved highly effective.
Bowlers Seal Comprehensive Win
Malinga finished with 4 for 32, continuing his impressive run in the IPL, while Harsh Dubey picked up three wickets in the final over to wrap up the innings.
Delhi Capitals were eventually restricted to 195/9, falling well short of the target as SRH secured a convincing victory.
