Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) head into their IPL 2026 clash on contrasting trajectories since their meeting in last year’s second Qualifier. While PBKS have surged to second place and remain unbeaten so far this season, MI have slipped to second from bottom, struggling in both batting and bowling departments.

PBKS’ rise has been driven by a high-scoring approach led by captain Shreyas Iyer, who returns to his home ground for this fixture. Their aggressive style is reflected in a run rate of 10.05 and a balls-per-six ratio of 8.70, both second only to RCB. Notably, PBKS have maintained their attacking intent even when losing wickets, continuing to push the scoring rate.

Their preference for attacking pace rather than spin could suit conditions at Wankhede, where the red-soil surface typically favours fast bowlers and offers limited assistance to spinners.

For MI, the challenge is clear. Their batting has yet to fire consistently, and they will need a significant improvement to match PBKS’ scoring output, particularly at a venue known for high totals. MI are also looking to end two streaks: three consecutive defeats following their opening win, and PBKS’ unbeaten run.

Team News

Rohit Sharma retired hurt on 19 off 13 in the previous match against RCB due to a suspected hamstring issue. He was seen doing light training and a brief net session on Wednesday, but his availability remains uncertain.

If Rohit is unavailable, MI may consider opening with Quinton de Kock, though that would require adjusting their overseas combination, potentially leaving out one of Sherfane Rutherford, Mitchell Santner, or Trent Boult. Another option could be bringing in Danish Malewar as a direct replacement, or reshuffling the bowling attack to accommodate changes.

Will Jacks remains unavailable as he is still travelling to India.

PBKS, meanwhile, have no injury concerns and are expected to retain the same XI that has delivered consistent results so far.

In the Spotlight

Jasprit Bumrah is yet to take a wicket this season, while Arshdeep Singh has struggled for control, conceding runs at an economy rate of 10.64. Although he has been effective at the death, he has not taken a powerplay wicket in his last 10 IPL innings.

Tilak Varma has also endured a quiet start, dismissed by spin three times in four matches and averaging 8.75, with a highest score of 20. MI will be hoping for a turnaround from their No. 4 batter.

Key Stats and Match-Ups

  • Ryan Rickelton has scored 50 runs off 36 balls against Arshdeep Singh, being dismissed twice
  • Against Marco Jansen, Rickelton has been out three times in 46 balls while scoring 70 runs
  • Trent Boult has dismissed Prabhsimran Singh three times while conceding 31 runs in 31 balls
  • Yuzvendra Chahal has dismissed Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya four times each

Pitch and Conditions

Conditions at Wankhede are expected to be challenging, with a heatwave warning in place and temperatures likely to reach the high 30s Celsius. Humidity levels are also expected to rise.

The surface has produced high-scoring games, with all four innings at the venue this season crossing 220. Dew could again play a role, and while RCB won batting first in the previous match, chasing has generally been the preferred option.
