Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans enter the early phase of their IPL 2026 campaigns with a clear takeaway — the middle order has played a decisive role in both victories and defeats.

Delhi Capitals have already shown how crucial that phase can be. In their opening match, they recovered from 26 for 4 in a chase of 142 against Lucknow Super Giants, with Sameer Rizvi producing an unbeaten 70 off 47 and Tristan Stubbs adding 39* off 32. Rizvi followed that up with another rescue act, scoring 90 off 51 after DC slipped to 7 for 2 while chasing 163 against Mumbai Indians.

Gujarat Titans, meanwhile, have struggled to convert strong starts. They were well placed at 83 for 1 after ten overs against Punjab Kings, but their middle order — Glenn Phillips, Washington Sundar, Shahrukh Khan and Rahul Tewatia — failed to capitalise, resulting in a below-par total that was chased comfortably. A similar pattern unfolded against Rajasthan Royals, where GT lost momentum from 107 for 1 in the 11th over while chasing 211, with no middle-order batter crossing 25.

Since IPL 2025, GT’s middle order (positions 4 to 7) has averaged 20.1 — the lowest in the tournament. With their top order of Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler previously driving successful chases, the spotlight has now shifted firmly onto the middle overs. Improving that phase could be key to ending DC’s unbeaten run and securing their first points of the season.

Gill’s Return a Timely Boost

Gujarat Titans are set to receive a significant encouragement with the expected return of captain Shubman Gill. His absence in the previous match, where he was seen with bandages around his shoulder and neck due to spasms, was a notable setback.

Sai Sudharsan has confirmed that Gill has recovered and is fit to play. He is likely to return to the top of the order, potentially replacing Kumar Kushagra, strengthening both the batting lineup and leadership group. GT may also consider bringing in Jason Holder to reinforce the middle order.

Gill’s return has also generated massive excitement among fans, as many of them expect him to make an immediate impact.

Players in the Spotlight

Nitish Rana’s position at No. 3 remains under scrutiny for Delhi Capitals. Batting in a role that allows access to the powerplay and influence through the middle overs, he has yet to deliver, scoring 15 off 17 against PBKS and then being run out for a duck against MI. With Karun Nair waiting in the wings, pressure is mounting on Rana to produce quick runs.

For Gujarat Titans, Kagiso Rabada’s form is another point of concern. While he has taken three wickets in two matches, his economy rate of 10.85 reflects a continuation of recent trends. His economy rates over the last three IPL seasons — 10.08, 8.85 and 11.57 — underline the challenge. His effectiveness at the death, particularly with cross-seam deliveries, and the reduced use of yorkers remain areas to watch.

Key Stats and Match Context

  • Arun Jaitley Stadium’s pitch No. 5 has hosted four night matches across IPL 2024 and 2025, producing an average run rate of 10.11. The death-overs run rate rises to 12.67.
  • KL Rahul has scored just one run in IPL 2026 so far but has an excellent record against Mohammed Siraj, scoring 135 runs off 79 balls at a strike rate of 170.88, with only one dismissal.
  • Kagiso Rabada has dismissed Rahul three times in 12 innings at an average of 22.66, which could influence GT’s bowling strategy.
  • Sameer Rizvi’s unbeaten 90 against MI made him only the seventh IPL player to win three consecutive Player-of-the-Match awards, a streak dating back to IPL 2025. Another match-winning performance would make him the first to achieve four in a row.

Pitch and Conditions

The surface in Delhi is expected to favour high scoring. However, recent intermittent rain and the pitch being under covers could leave some moisture early on, offering assistance to seamers in the opening overs. Weather forecasts suggest possible thunderstorms and light rain around 4 PM, though conditions are expected to improve by match time.
