Dhruv Jurel played a decisive role in Rajasthan Royals’ narrow win over Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026, contributing not only with a match-defining innings but also with key tactical inputs in the field.

After a quiet outing in the season opener against Chennai Super Kings, Jurel responded with an impressive 75 off 42 balls in Ahmedabad, leading RR’s batting effort in a contest that was eventually decided by just six runs.

Jurel Anchors Strong Middle Phase

RR had already built a solid platform through Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who added 70 runs for the first wicket in 38 balls. While Jaiswal began to slow after reaching 36 off 20, Jurel quickly took control of the innings.

The pair added 56 runs together, with Jurel dominating the scoring. His innings, which included five fours and five sixes, helped RR maintain momentum through the middle overs.

“He assessed the conditions, he allowed Jaiswal to sort of continue the partnership, and then, once he got in, he took over. Great knock,” Aaron Finch said.

Recognition for Jurel’s Ability

Jurel’s promotion to No. 3 has drawn praise, with Ambati Rayudu highlighting his consistent performances and potential.

“I think he is quite under-rated,” Rayudu said. “He has been an exceptional talent in Indian cricket for two or three years now, and he’s not talked about much. And here he is, playing against good quality fast bowling, and he’s been so comfortable. The kind of shots he has played [are] so good on the eye. He’s a proper talent.”

Tactical Role in the Field

Jurel’s influence extended beyond his batting. During Gujarat Titans’ chase, his discussions with Ravi Bishnoi helped shape a key bowling strategy.

Bishnoi targeted left-hand batters with googlies towards the longer boundary, resulting in the dismissals of B Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar.

“That was my tactic, which I had discussed with the team and with Dhruv,” Bishnoi said.

Crucial Decision at the Death

Jurel also played a part in a pivotal captaincy call late in the match. Rajasthan Royals initially planned to have Tushar Deshpande bowl the 19th over and Jofra Archer the final over.

However, that plan was altered following Jurel’s suggestion.

“Riyan changed his mind,” Archer said. “He [Deshpande] was going to bowl the 19th and I was going to bowl the last. Everything that could have gone right in the field went right and I am proud of the boys.”

Captain Riyan Parag later confirmed that the change was influenced by Jurel.

“I was actually going to switch up the order,” Parag said. “So, credit to Dhruv Jurel for that. He asked me to go Jofra on the 19th and the plan was because it was a three-ball difference – it was 15 off 12 – and I just wanted to take a chance. Go as fast as possible and as aggressive as possible.”

All-Round Impact Seals Result

Jurel’s contributions with the bat, combined with his involvement in key tactical decisions, played a significant role in RR’s victory. His performance underlined his growing importance within the side in both execution and game awareness.
