England white-ball captain Harry Brook and all-rounder Jacob Bethell have returned to the spotlight following developments both on and off the field. While Bethell is currently part of IPL 2026, Brook will miss the season and faces a two-year ban after withdrawing from the tournament for the second consecutive year without a medical reason, in line with new BCCI regulations.
The two players were recently issued formal warnings after an investigation into an incident involving a nightclub bouncer in New Zealand late last year.
Details of the New Zealand Incident
The incident occurred in Wellington on the eve of an ODI on November 1. Harry Brook, Jacob Bethell, and fast bowler Josh Tongue had gone out late when Brook was denied entry into a nightclub.
A confrontation followed, during which Brook was struck by a bouncer. Initially, Brook stated that he had been alone, but in January he admitted that Bethell and Tongue were also present and that he had withheld that information.
The episode drew criticism and raised concerns over discipline within the England setup, with discussions emerging around Brook’s leadership, though no change was made.
Cricket Regulator Issues Warning
The case was reviewed by the Cricket Regulator, which found that both Brook and Bethell had breached professional conduct standards.
The regulation reads: “No Participant may conduct themself in a manner, do any act or make any omission at any time which is improper or which may be prejudicial to the interests of cricket or which may bring the ECB, the game of cricket or any cricketer or group of cricketers into disrepute.”
“As a consequence of those investigations, the Regulator has issued a caution notice to Harry Brook and Jacob Bethell in relation to their conduct during that night,” a Cricket Regulator statement read.
The caution notices will remain on their disciplinary records for three years. No action was taken against Josh Tongue who was not part of the official ODI squad at the time.
Following the incident, England management under Rob Key has introduced stricter measures, including a midnight curfew during tours.
Bethell Turns Focus to IPL 2026
Jacob Bethell has now shifted attention to IPL 2026, where he has been retained by Royal Challengers Bengaluru for INR 2.6 crore.
He enters the tournament after strong performances, including a notable T20 World Cup campaign. RCB have started their season with a win over Sunrisers Hyderabad, with contributions from Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, and captain Rajat Patidar in the successful chase.
However, Bethell faces competition for a place in the playing XI due to RCB’s established overseas options, including Phil Salt, leaving team management with selection decisions to make.
