Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) registered the first successful defence of IPL 2026, posting 226 for 8 — the highest total of the season so far — and defeating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 65 runs. Despite moments where the target appeared within reach, KKR were eventually bowled out for 161 in 16 overs.
SRH’s success was built on a rapid start from Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, who put on 82 runs in just 5.4 overs. Head struck 46 off 21 balls, while Abhishek made 48 off 21. Although KKR regained some control during the middle phase, Heinrich Klaasen’s 52 off 35 balls ensured SRH added 51 runs in the final four overs.
Head and Abhishek Power SRH Early
After winning the toss, Ajinkya Rahane, playing his 200th IPL match, chose to bowl first. Vaibhav Arora began with three dot balls, beating Head’s outside edge, but the momentum quickly shifted. Head responded by hitting a boundary off the final delivery of the over and continued the assault in the next.
Blessing Muzarabani attempted a short-ball approach, but it proved ineffective as Abhishek capitalised, including a six off another short delivery. Head followed with an aggressive over against Vaibhav, striking two sixes and two fours.
Rahane introduced spin, with Sunil Narine conceding only three runs in the fourth over, though Head survived a chance. From the other end, Abhishek attacked Varun Chakravarthy, collecting 25 runs in a single over with two sixes and three fours.
Kartik Tyagi eventually broke the opening stand by dismissing Head, but not before SRH raced to 84 for 1 at the end of the powerplay.
KKR Fight Back Through Muzarabani
Muzarabani brought KKR back into the contest by removing Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma within three balls. Kishan was caught at deep cover, while Abhishek was taken at deep square leg after a low catch confirmed by the third umpire.
Anukul Roy then dismissed Aniket Verma in the following over to reduce SRH to 118 for 4. Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy steadied the innings, with the scoring rate slowing as only 37 runs came between overs 10 and 14.
Klaasen Leads Late Surge
The final overs saw SRH regain momentum. Klaasen and Reddy began to accelerate, although Tyagi and Vaibhav initially kept things tight. Reddy broke the pressure with a six over the bowler’s head in the 17th over.
Klaasen then took charge, including a reverse-lap six off Tyagi, while Reddy added boundaries. Though Vaibhav dismissed Reddy and Salil Arora in successive deliveries, Klaasen, supported by Harsh Dubey and Shivang Kumar, guided SRH past the 220 mark.
KKR Begin Chase Strongly
KKR’s chase started briskly, with Finn Allen striking 24 runs off David Payne in the opening over. However, Harsh Dubey responded by dismissing Allen.
Ajinkya Rahane struggled for fluency and was out for 8 off 10 balls, but Angkrish Raghuvanshi kept the momentum going. His 27-ball fifty took KKR to 110 for 3 in ten overs.
Cameron Green was run out in the next over following a mix-up, with Eshan Malinga breaking the stumps after stopping the ball. The third umpire confirmed Green’s dismissal as the batters had not crossed.
Raghuvanshi and Rinku Singh continued to push the chase forward, taking KKR to 100 in nine overs, aided in part by lapses in SRH’s fielding.
Sealing the victory
The turning point came when Raghuvanshi was run out after another misunderstanding with Rinku Singh. Attempting a quick single, Raghuvanshi was unable to make his ground in time after Rinku halted midway.
Soon after, Nitish Kumar Reddy removed both Anukul Roy and Rinku Singh in successive overs. Narine and Ramandeep Singh briefly carried KKR to 155 for 6 in the 15th over, but both fell to Malinga’s slower deliveries.
Jaydev Unadkat sealed the victory by claiming two wickets in two balls, wrapping up KKR’s innings and confirming a comprehensive win for SRH.
