India began their T20 World Cup campaign as strong title contenders. Despite a few stumbles in the group phase, the Suryakumar Yadav-led side advanced to the Super 8. However, a heavy 76-run defeat to South Africa dealt a significant setback, pushing India’s net run-rate down to -3.800.

With matches against Zimbabwe in Chennai and the West Indies still to come in the Super 8 stage, India must secure victories in both fixtures to stay in contention. Their immediate focus is a Zimbabwe side entering the contest with confidence.

Who Has Sanju Samson Replaced?

At the toss, Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza made the right call and opted to bowl first, anticipating dew later in the game. India introduced two notable changes to their playing XI: Axar Patel replaced Washington, and Sanju Samson returned to the lineup.

In a notable decision, Samson has come in for Rinku Singh. The middle-order batter had struggled for form during the tournament and had briefly travelled home due to his father’s illness. Although he returned in time for the fixture, the team management chose to include the Kerala batter for this crucial encounter.

What Does Samson Offer?

There remains the possibility that Samson may not occupy Rinku’s usual middle-order slot. Instead, he could be deployed at the top alongside Abhishek Sharma. With Sikandar Raza’s off-breaks posing a threat, India appear to have opted for a right-hander at the top of the order.

While several Indian batters have found it difficult against spin, Samson is known for handling spinners effectively. His ability to take the attack to them could provide India with added momentum.

Rinku had endured a difficult run in the ongoing World Cup, and Samson’s inclusion may see India adopt a left-right opening combination. Tilak Varma, who has also faced challenges with form, could feature in the middle order in Rinku’s previous role.

Big Opportunity For Samson

Earlier in the T20 World Cup 2026, Samson featured against Namibia and struck a brisk 22 before being left out of the subsequent game. He has been on the sidelines in four of India’s five matches so far.

The fixture against Zimbabwe presents a significant opportunity. A strong performance could strengthen his case for the next match, while another underwhelming outing may leave his T20I future uncertain.
