Young sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has recently drawn global attention, may have to wait longer for his India debut.
Earlier indications suggested that the Rajasthan Royals batter could feature for the senior side during the upcoming Ireland tour. However, recent developments point to a temporary setback in those plans.
The 15-year-old has been included in a pool of 35 T20 specialists shortlisted as potential options for the Ireland tour scheduled across June and July.
Visa Requirements Complicate Selection Plans
One of the primary factors behind the delay relates to visa procedures. As per PTI, the cricket board directed selectors to submit a list of at least 35 players for visa processing. Since the team will enter through Ireland rather than England, each individual must obtain a separate Irish visa.
“The selectors were asked by the BCCI logistics department to give at least 35 names whose Irish visa needed to be processed. Since the team’s first port of entry will be Ireland and not England, a UK visa won’t suffice. Everyone requires a separate Irish visa,” a BCCI source told PTI.
Competition for Spots Remains Intense
Beyond logistical challenges, strong competition within India’s T20 setup presents another hurdle. Several established opening batters are currently performing consistently, including Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan, all of whom have delivered notable performances, including in the T20 World Cup 2026.
Yashasvi Jaiswal is also available as an additional option, further intensifying the competition for places at the top of the order.
“The selection committee is convinced Vaibhav is ready, but then you are talking about Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan. All three are half-centurions in the T20 World Cup final. If you take a fourth opener, then Yashasvi Jaiswal is also there,” the source said.
Team balance adds another layer of complexity. Any decision to include Sooryavanshi could require leaving out one of the current players, which may raise further questions about the overall composition of the side.
“Vaibhav is ready, but the selectors need to give very good reasons to drop Abhishek or Sanju. Because if you drop either one, the question arises — how is Surya keeping his place?” the source added.
Alternative Opportunities Under Consideration
There is still no confirmed timeline for Sooryavanshi’s debut. While the Ireland tour had initially appeared likely, other assignments are now being considered, including tours of Zimbabwe and a home series against the West Indies. The Asian Games in Japan later this year is also viewed as a possible opportunity.
“It could be the UK tour or Zimbabwe. But the best platform could be the Asian Games or the West Indies home series, as these overlap, meaning two T20 squads. Vaibhav will play one of the two, if not earlier,” the source said.
The possibility of India fielding two separate squads during overlapping tournaments could improve his chances of selection in the near future.
Whenever Sooryavanshi does make his debut, it is expected to mark a significant milestone. If he represents India this year, he will become the youngest ever to play for the national team.
Strong Start in IPL 2026
In the meantime, Sooryavanshi has continued to impress in IPL 2026 for Rajasthan Royals. His performances include a rapid 78 off 26 balls, a 52 off 17 deliveries, and a quick 39 off 14 balls. He has accumulated 200 runs in five innings so far this season.
He is next set to feature against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 19 at Eden Gardens.
