The IPL 2026 season produced one of its most dramatic matches in Raipur on Sunday, as Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated Mumbai Indians by two wickets in a thrilling contest to move to the top of the points table. For Mumbai Indians, the defeat proved costly, as another loss confirmed their elimination from the tournament.

Tim David, however, became one of the major talking points from the RCB vs MI clash after reportedly making a middle-finger gesture during the match. The original source of the video has not been confirmed, but the clip spread quickly and triggered widespread discussion among social media users after the high-intensity encounter.

On Monday, the IPL fined David 30 per cent of his match fee and gave him two demerit points for a Level 1 breach of the IPL Code of Conduct. In its official statement, the league confirmed that David had breached Article 2.6 of the Code of Conduct, which deals with “using a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting.” David admitted the offence and accepted the punishment handed down by match referee Amit Sharma.

This is also the second time in the current season that David has been punished for violating the IPL Code of Conduct. Earlier in the tournament, he was fined 25 per cent of his match fee and received one demerit point for “disobeying an umpire’s instruction” during RCB’s earlier meeting with Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. After the latest sanction, David will face a one-match suspension if he receives one more demerit point.

David was not the only RCB member punished after the match against MI. Head coach Andy Flower was also fined 15% of his applicable match fee for the “use of an audible obscenity” during the Raipur game. A separate IPL statement said the incident occurred “when Andy spoke aggressively with the fourth umpire.”

Famous Middle-Finger Incidents in Cricket

The middle-finger gesture has created controversy in cricket on several previous occasions. Virat Kohli made headlines for using the gesture during India’s 2011/12 tour of Australia. The batter directed it towards the crowd during the Sydney Test and was later fined half of his match fees.

Former Pakistan pacer Sohail Tanvir also used the gesture after dismissing Ben Cutting during a CPL match in 2013. Former India coach Greg Chappell was involved in a similar controversy when he showed the gesture to an angry Indian crowd after an ODI in 2005.

Gautam Gambhir also came under attention during the 2023 Asia Cup for an obscene gesture that he claimed being attributed to a section of the crowd that had been raising slogans against India.
