Mumbai Indians have been eliminated already, but handed Punjab Kings their fifth consecutive defeat with a six-wicket win in Dharamsala, tightening the playoff race in IPL 2026.
Punjab Kings remain fourth on the table with 13 points from 12 matches, while Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals trail closely with 12 points each and a game in hand.
Bumrah Leads MI in Absence of Regular Captain
With Hardik Pandya sidelined due to back spasms and Suryakumar Yadav unavailable for personal reasons, Jasprit Bumrah captained Mumbai Indians for the first time in the IPL and opted to field after winning the toss.
Punjab Kings got off to a steady start, reaching 100 in 11 overs largely thanks to Prabhsimran Singh’s 57 off 32 balls. However, Shardul Thakur’s four-wicket spell disrupted their progress, reducing them to 140 for 7 in the 17th over.
A late surge from Azmatullah Omarzai (38 off 17), along with contributions from Vishnu Vinod (15* off 8) and Xavier Bartlett (18* off 7), helped PBKS post 200 for 8, with 60 runs coming in the final 22 deliveries.
PBKS Build Before Collapse
Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh added early boundaries in a six-less powerplay, though Arya was dismissed by Deepak Chahar in the final over of that phase, leaving PBKS at 55 for 1.
Prabhsimran, who survived chances on 5 and 28, accelerated with aggressive strokeplay, reaching his fifty off 29 balls and pushing PBKS past the 100 mark.
The momentum shifted when Shardul Thakur struck twice in the 12th over, dismissing Prabhsimran and Shreyas Iyer in quick succession. He later removed Suryansh Shedge and Marco Jansen to complete a four-wicket haul.
Rickelton Sets the Tone in Chase
Mumbai’s chase began cautiously before Ryan Rickelton took charge. He scored 48 off 23 balls, with most of his runs coming on the leg side, including four sixes. MI reached 59 in the powerplay, with Rickelton contributing 47 of those runs.
Punjab Kings fought back after the powerplay, with Omarzai dismissing Rickelton, Marco Jansen removing Naman Dhir, and Yuzvendra Chahal bowling Rohit Sharma to leave MI at 89 for 3 after ten overs.
Tilak and Jacks Seal the Win
Despite tight overs from PBKS bowlers, Tilak Varma kept the chase alive with timely boundaries. With 72 needed from the last five overs, the game remained in the balance.
Tilak and Sherfane Rutherford briefly shifted momentum with a 20-run over off Chahal, though Omarzai responded with a tight 17th over, dismissing Rutherford and conceding just two runs.
With 50 required from three overs, MI regained control through Tilak and Will Jacks, who attacked Marco Jansen in the 18th over.
In the final over, with 14 needed, Jacks struck a six off a full toss before Tilak finished the match in style, hitting back-to-back sixes to remain unbeaten on 75 off 33 balls and take MI home with one ball to spare.
