Quetta Gladiators secured their first victory of the season with a 40-run win over Hyderabad Kingsmen, backed by half-centuries from Shamyl Hussain and Hasan Nawaz, along with a disciplined bowling effort.
Defending 174 for 8 on a surface where high totals had been chased a day earlier, Gladiators overcame expectations by restricting Kingsmen to 134 for 8.
Early Strikes Set the Tone
Quetta needed early breakthroughs, and Alzarri Joseph provided one immediately, using a sharp bouncer to have Saim Ayub caught behind in the opening over.
Although that over yielded 17 runs, including two edges from Marnus Labuschagne, Abrar Ahmed struck at key moments, removing Maaz Sadaqat and Usman Khan in the second and sixth overs. Kingsmen ended the powerplay at 37 for 3 and were never able to recover fully.
Kingsmen Struggle in Chase
Hyderabad Kingsmen failed to build momentum during the chase as wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Hassan Khan’s quick 31 briefly offered hope, but his dismissal in the 15th over ended any realistic chance of a comeback.
The Gladiators’ bowlers maintained pressure throughout, exposing weaknesses in the Kingsmen batting line-up.
Shamyl, Nawaz Rebuild After Early Setback
Earlier, Quetta Gladiators had also faced early trouble after captain Saud Shakeel opted to bat, losing two quick wickets.
Shamyl Hussain and Hasan Nawaz steadied the innings with a crucial 89-run partnership off 64 balls. Playing only his second PSL match, Shamyl registered another half-century, adjusting his approach after early wickets.
The pair focused on strike rotation and capitalising on scoring opportunities, helping rebuild the innings.
Late Push Takes Gladiators Past 170
After Shamyl and Nawaz were dismissed, Quetta lost four wickets in 14 balls, briefly stalling their progress. Maheesh Theekshana, on PSL debut, struck twice in consecutive deliveries to remove Khawaja Nafay and Ben McDermott.
However, Tom Curran’s late contribution of 31 from 18 balls lifted the total to 174, a score that proved more than sufficient.
Fielding Concerns for Kingsmen
Hyderabad Kingsmen have now lost both matches this season. Alongside batting struggles, their fielding and discipline remain concerns.
They had dropped four catches in their previous game against Lahore Qalandars and conceded five no-balls in this match, including three from spinners.
