Ireland Claim Historic First Victory Over India

Ireland created history by defeating India for the first time in international cricket, securing a memorable 34-run victory in the opening T20I in Belfast.

The defeat marked a disappointing beginning to Shreyas Iyer’s tenure as India’s T20I captain. Chasing 183 for victory, India failed to produce a successful run chase as Ireland celebrated their maiden win over the Men in Blue after losing each of their previous eight meetings across all formats.

Iyer also endured a difficult return to T20I cricket after more than two and a half years away from the format. Batting in the chase, he managed just three runs from seven deliveries before being dismissed by Matt Hollard.

Shreyas Iyer Joins Unwanted Captaincy List

The loss placed Shreyas Iyer among a group of Indian captains who were defeated in their first T20I as skipper.

The list now includes:

  • Virat Kohli
  • Rishabh Pant
  • Shubman Gill
  • Shreyas Iyer

His captaincy debut therefore ended with an unwanted record despite making several positive tactical decisions early in Ireland’s innings.

India Lose to Ireland for the First Time

The Belfast defeat also ended India’s unbeaten record against Ireland.

Before this match, India had won all eight previous meetings between the two nations across international cricket. Ireland’s victory now gives them their first success in nine matches against India.

Matt Hollard also entered Ireland’s record books with one of the best bowling performances against India in T20 Internationals.

Best Bowling Figures for Ireland Against India in T20Is

  • Peter Chase – 4/35 (Malahide, 2018)
  • Matt Hollard – 3/28 (Belfast, 2026)
  • Kevin O’Brien – 3/40 (Malahide, 2018)
  • Mark Adair – 3/42 (Malahide, 2022)

End of India’s Series Dominance

The defeat also ended an impressive run established under former T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav.

From 2024 to 2026, India had not lost a single bilateral T20I series under Suryakumar’s leadership. However, losing the opening match of a two-game series means India can no longer win the series against Ireland and can now only hope to level it in the second and final match.

Should India lose again, it would also become Gautam Gambhir’s first bilateral T20I series defeat as India’s head coach against Ireland.

Another Unwanted World Cup Record

India also added another unwanted milestone following their recent T20 World Cup triumph.

They became the first men’s team in T20I history to lose the first match after winning the T20 World Cup on two separate occasions. India had previously suffered the same fate after lifting the 2024 title, losing to Zimbabwe.

The last three men’s T20 World Cup champions have all lost their first T20I after becoming world champions:

  • England (2022 champions) – lost to Bangladesh in 2023
  • India (2024 champions) – lost to Zimbabwe in 2024
  • India (2026 champions) – lost to Ireland in 2026

Pressure Builds Ahead of Series Finale

India now head into the second T20I needing a victory simply to avoid a series defeat. After suffering their first-ever loss to Ireland and setting multiple unwanted records, Shreyas Iyer’s side will be under pressure to produce a much stronger performance and restore parity before the series concludes.
