Birmingham Phoenix produced a breathtaking batting display to defeat Trent Rockets by 10 runs in a run-fest at Edgbaston during The Hundred 2026.
Powered by aggressive contributions throughout the top order, Phoenix piled up 214/4 before holding off a spirited chase led by Tom Banton, who smashed a late 67 but could not prevent the Rockets from falling just short.
Phoenix Batters Light Up Edgbaston
Birmingham’s top order dominated from the outset on an excellent batting surface. Joe Clarke and Will Smeed laid the platform with a blistering opening partnership, racing to 54 runs from the first 25 balls of the innings.
Clarke was the standout performer, hammering 68 from just 33 deliveries. His superb innings featured seven fours and four sixes as he attacked every Rockets bowler with confidence. Smeed provided the perfect support, striking 51 from 28 balls at a strike rate of 182 before Clarke departed with Phoenix well placed on 104.
The momentum never slowed.

Rehan Ahmed continued the assault by launching five sixes, while captain Donovan Ferreira added a devastating cameo of 31 from only nine balls, clearing the ropes three times.
Phoenix finished with 214/4 after smashing 17 sixes, equalling the highest total of maximums by a team in the tournament’s history.
Among the Rockets bowlers, Calvin Harrison stood out with figures of 2/27 from his 20 balls, proving the most economical bowler despite the relentless scoring.

Rockets Start Strong Before Phoenix Fight Back
Trent Rockets launched an aggressive reply through Ben Duckett and Finn Allen. The opening pair raced to an unbeaten 54 after the powerplay, keeping the required rate firmly under control and putting pressure back on the home side.
Pakistan spinner Usman Tariq provided the breakthrough by deceiving Allen into a mistimed lofted shot that was comfortably caught by Scott Currie at long-on.
Currie then produced another crucial moment, finding movement off the pitch to force an edge from Duckett shortly before the batter reached his half-century.
With both openers dismissed, the chase lost some of its momentum.
Tariq Delivers Key Spell
Usman Tariq proved decisive during the middle phase of the innings.
The mystery spinner mixed his variations effectively and removed dangerous finisher Tim David for just two runs, with Clarke completing an excellent catch behind the stumps.

His disciplined spell finished with figures of 2/36 and ensured the Rockets never fully recovered after losing their opening partnership.
Banton’s Heroics Fall Short
Tom Banton kept Trent Rockets alive with a spectacular counterattack. The explosive batter blasted 67 from only 32 balls, striking boundaries all around the ground as he threatened to produce one of the greatest run chases in Hundred history.
Despite his efforts, the required rate eventually became too steep, and the Rockets closed on 204/7, finishing 10 runs behind the target.
Harrison provided late entertainment by hitting the final two deliveries of the innings for six, ending with a remarkable personal strike rate of 600.
Clarke Praises Phoenix Batting Depth
Clarke, who was named Meerkat Match Hero, credited Birmingham’s powerful batting line-up for setting up the victory.
“We’ve got licence at the top of the order with our strength in depth, we got the team off to a good start and then the big hitters came in at the end and got us extra momentum.”
Reflecting on his attacking approach, he added:
“I didn’t want to get out being defensive, so I thought I’d be ultra-aggressive, tried to put them off their lengths and luckily it came off in my favour.”
Clarke also praised Usman Tariq after the spinner’s match-winning spell.
With a dominant batting display backed by timely wickets, Birmingham Phoenix made an early statement as one of the teams to beat in The Hundred 2026.
