The curtain has finally come down on one of the greatest partnerships in franchise cricket history. Stephen Fleming leaves Chennai Super Kings after the two parties mutually agreed to end their remarkable association, bringing an unforgettable 18-year journey to a close.
Fleming’s departure marks the end of an era that transformed Chennai Super Kings (CSK) into one of the most successful and consistent franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Along with stepping down as CSK head coach, the former New Zealand captain will also leave his coaching roles with the Joburg Super Kings in the SA20 and the Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket.
The decision follows a difficult period for the franchise. After lifting their fifth IPL title in 2023, CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs in the next three seasons. The team finished at the bottom of the table in 2025 before ending the 2026 campaign in eighth place, leading the management to begin a new chapter ahead of IPL 2027.
Speaking after the announcement, Fleming reflected on his incredible journey with the franchise.
“Eighteen years is a lifetime in sport, and I leave with nothing but gratitude. My time with Chennai Super Kings has been the privilege of my coaching career.”
Stephen Fleming CSK Coaching Record
The Stephen Fleming CSK coaching record is among the greatest in IPL history. Fleming first represented CSK as an opening batter in the inaugural 2008 season before taking over as head coach in 2009. He then built an iconic partnership with captain MS Dhoni, creating one of the most successful coach captain combinations the game has ever seen.
During his time as head coach, Fleming guided Chennai Super Kings to:
- Five IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023, the joint highest by any coach in IPL history.
- Two Champions League T20 titles in 2010 and 2014.
- 12 IPL playoff appearances in 17 seasons.
- 10 IPL final appearances, highlighting CSK’s unmatched consistency.
- 16 seasons as head coach, making him the longest serving coach in IPL history.
Even during CSK’s suspension in 2016 and 2017, Fleming continued coaching in the IPL with Rising Pune Supergiant, guiding the franchise to the final in 2017.
Why Did Stephen Fleming Leave Chennai Super Kings?
The split comes with mutual respect rather than disagreement. However, the changing nature of T20 cricket played a significant role in the decision.
For years, CSK built success around experienced players who thrived under pressure. After the 2023 title, the franchise shifted towards investing heavily in young, aggressive talent capable of playing fearless cricket from the first ball.
That change created a tactical mismatch. Fleming’s proven approach focused on calculated batting, pacing innings carefully and finishing games strongly, while the newer squad was designed for high-risk, attacking cricket. As a result, CSK struggled to find the right balance and failed to produce the consistency that had defined the franchise for over a decade.
Although Stephen Fleming leaves Chennai Super Kings, his legacy remains unmatched. Under his leadership, CSK became one of the most respected teams in franchise cricket, setting standards for consistency, stability and success. His influence on the franchise, alongside MS Dhoni, will continue to shape Chennai Super Kings long after his departure.
