New Zealand Level the Series at The Oval
New Zealand produced a commanding display at The Oval to defeat England by 253 runs in the second Test and level the series. The visitors controlled the match for most of the contest, with Matt Henry delivering a career-best performance to finish with 11 wickets in the match.
England Collapse on Final Morning
England resumed the final day on 182 for 5, still needing an improbable 281 runs to reach a target of 463. Any hopes of a dramatic comeback quickly disappeared as New Zealand’s bowlers wrapped up the innings inside the opening hour.
Henry struck early to remove stand-in captain Joe Root for 77. Root had carried England’s hopes overnight but added only two runs before being trapped lbw.
Henry Finishes with Career-Best Match Haul
Henry continued his relentless spell by dismissing Jofra Archer, Matt Fisher and Josh Tongue in quick succession. Jordan Cox briefly entertained the crowd with a few attacking strokes, but he too fell to Henry as England were bowled out for 209.
The fast bowler finished with 11 wickets in the match, his best performance against England in Test cricket.
New Zealand Batting Sets Up the Win
New Zealand’s victory was built on strong contributions throughout the match. In the first innings, Glenn Phillips led the way with 101, while Tom Blundell added 51 to help the visitors post 391.
England replied with 291, but Henry’s five-wicket haul ensured New Zealand secured a crucial first-innings advantage.
The visitors then strengthened their position in the second innings. Henry Nicholls scored 121, Rachin Ravindra made 76 and Daryl Mitchell added 68 as New Zealand reached 362 and set England a daunting fourth-innings target.
ICC Penalty Adds to England’s Misery
The defeat was made worse by disciplinary sanctions after the match. England were found to be 12 overs short of the required over-rate and were penalised by the ICC.
Players were fined 50 percent of their match fees, while the team received a 12-point deduction in the World Test Championship standings.
Series Decider Awaits at Trent Bridge
The result levels the series and sets up a decisive third Test at Trent Bridge. England are expected to welcome Ben Stokes back after his absence was strongly felt throughout the match.
New Zealand, meanwhile, will enter the finale full of confidence after producing one of their most dominant Test performances in England in recent years.
