In a high-quality ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 warm-up clash, England Women defeated India Women by five runs in Cardiff. While the result went England’s way, both teams will take plenty of positives from this thrilling game that provided valuable preparation ahead of the tournament.

After being asked to bat first, England posted an impressive 171/6, built around half-centuries from Amy Jones and captain Nat Sciver-Brunt. India responded bravely, with wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh producing a stunning counterattack, but the chase ultimately fell just short as England’s bowlers delivered under pressure in the closing overs.

Amy Jones and Nat Sciver-Brunt Lay the Foundation

England made a confident start despite losing opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge early. Amy Jones continued her excellent form with a composed 64 from 45 deliveries, striking boundaries regularly while keeping the scoreboard moving.

Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt, returning in search of valuable match practice before the World Cup, played a crucial anchoring role. She scored 57 from 45 balls, carefully building her innings before accelerating during the latter stages.

The pair helped England maintain control through the middle overs, although India’s spinners managed to slow the scoring rate and create pressure by taking regular wickets.

Just when India appeared to be regaining momentum, Dani Gibson produced a game-changing late cameo. The all-rounder smashed an unbeaten 30 from only 12 balls, hitting four boundaries and a six to lift England to a competitive total of 171/6.

For India, Shreyanka Patil was the most successful bowler with figures of 2/29, while the spin attack once again showed its ability to disrupt opposition batters during the middle overs.

India Lose Early Wickets

India’s chase began poorly when Smriti Mandhana was dismissed for just one run. The top order struggled to convert starts, with several batters reaching double figures before being dismissed.

Shafali Verma, Harmanpreet Kaur, and the middle order all showed glimpses of promise but failed to build the substantial partnership required to chase a target above 170.

At one stage, England appeared firmly in control as India continued to lose wickets at crucial moments.

Richa Ghosh Produces a Stunning Counterattack

The complexion of the match changed dramatically when Richa Ghosh arrived at the crease.

The explosive wicketkeeper-batter launched a remarkable assault on England’s bowling attack, smashing 68 runs from just 36 deliveries. Her innings featured nine boundaries and two sixes and transformed what had looked like a comfortable England victory into a tense finish.

Richa attacked both pace and spin with confidence, keeping India in contention despite wickets falling around her. Her ability to find boundaries consistently ensured the required run rate remained manageable heading into the final overs.

With India needing six runs from the final three deliveries, the game remained wide open. However, the decisive moment arrived when Richa was stumped in the final over, ending India’s hopes of completing a dramatic comeback.

England Bowlers Hold Their Nerve

England’s bowlers showed impressive composure under pressure, particularly during the final stages of the chase.

Left-arm spinner Linsey Smith delivered the crucial final over and finished with outstanding figures of 3/42. Her spell included the key wicket of Richa Ghosh, effectively sealing victory for the hosts.

Charlie Dean also impressed with 2/16, using her control and variations to keep India’s batters under pressure during the middle overs.

England experimented with several tactical decisions during the game, including giving Alice Capsey the wicketkeeping gloves to provide additional experience for their backup keeper ahead of the tournament.

Valuable Preparation for Both Teams

Despite the defeat, India will be encouraged by several aspects of their performance. Richa Ghosh’s outstanding innings highlighted the firepower available in the middle order, while the bowling unit once again showed its ability to compete against elite opposition.

England, meanwhile, will be pleased with the batting form of Jones and Sciver-Brunt, as well as their ability to defend a total under pressure.

Both teams now shift their focus to the main tournament and appear ready to challenge strongly during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. England will begin their World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka on June 12 at Edgbaston, while India will face Pakistan on June 14 in one of the most anticipated matches of the group stage.
