Lucknow Super Giants have been eliminated from the IPL 2026 playoff race after suffering a five-wicket defeat to Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk. The result made the Rishabh Pant-led side the first team this season to be knocked out of contention.

Following the loss, LSG remain at the bottom of the points table with 6 points from 11 matches. They have also become the first team in IPL 2026 to suffer eight defeats.

Although Lucknow Super Giants still have three league matches left, they can reach a maximum of only 12 points. That total will not be enough for qualification, given the current table situation.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals are already on 12 points, and with these teams still scheduled to face each other, at least one of them will move to 14 points. As a result, LSG no longer have a mathematical route to the playoffs.

CSK Defeat Ends Lucknow’s Hopes

In a must-win game, LSG started strongly as Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis added 77 runs for the opening wicket. However, once the first breakthrough came, the Rishabh Pant-led side lost wickets at regular intervals.

Lucknow eventually posted 203, giving their bowlers a competitive total to defend. In reply, CSK lost an early wicket, but Urvil Patel changed the momentum with a blistering innings. The right-hander smashed a 13-ball fifty, equalling the record for the fastest half-century in IPL history.

LSG did manage to pull things back in the death overs and made the chase tense. However, Aiden Markram could not defend 10 runs in the final over, as CSK completed the win and confirmed Lucknow’s exit from the tournament.

Lucknow Super Giants’ Season So Far

LSG began their IPL 2026 campaign against Delhi Capitals. Despite struggling with the bat, they stayed competitive with the ball, but a partnership between Tristan Stubbs and Sameer Rizvi handed them defeat in the opener.

They responded with two consecutive wins, but their campaign soon unravelled with six straight losses. That poor run left them under serious pressure before they beat RCB in their previous match to stay alive briefly.

However, the defeat against CSK ended any remaining playoff hopes for Pant’s side.
